Do you guys reckon you have picked up an accent whilst living overseas? I've been here in the UK for almost 4.5 years and although I think I sound Kiwi (maybe not as full on as a fresh of the boat Kiwi), Australians in London think I sound Australian, Brits think I sound Kiwi (a few have even picked Canadian???), and Kiwi's still in NZ think I sound really British!! I think I've probably got some sort of wierd hybrid accent.

How about you guys? Do you think yours has changed? Or have other people commented on it?

Been here over 4 years now, and to a certain extent I think I have, yeah. When I returned from 3 weeks back in NZ 18 months ago my Aussie flattie thought I sounded real Kiwi again which I hadn't noticed. We also had a potential flatmate who was English checking out the gaff the other week who thought I was English to the great amusement of all my Irish flat mates.

I've always had a very mild accent for a Kiwi - my father beat it out of us. "enunciate and pronounciate your letters correctly!"

I think mine must have gone a bit more Brit cos I cring when I hear a broad Taranaki accent

I think phrases are the first think you pick up, like saying "yeah" at the end of every sentence Wink

I've never had too strong an accent, but most people have no difficultly figuring out where I'm from. I think your accent changes a lot depending on the situation as well. If you're with your kiwi/aussie mates, it will get stronger, if you're with english people, probably not as strong, and especially with people who don't speak particularly good english, cause a lot of them struggle with a really strong NZ accent, so subconsciously you change it to be understood.

I'm pretty sensitve to accents, and can pick most people's fairly quickly. I can also hear my own accent a lot of the time.... I'm not sure if that means mine will stay really strong, or I'll start losing it soon.... I hope I don't tho :/

First thing I remember hearing when landing in Auckland after 18 months away was when I went for a bottle of Coke in the Domestic terminal. "That'll be teww eaty thaanks" she said to me in her very Manukau accent. I was like WTF is that accent and why has Coke got up $1.60 in 18 months!!!

As a side thought, do you reckon you can pick different regions on NZ now by accents? I reckon I can. Especially Wairarapa/Upper Hutt :p

I went back to NZ for a week after 16 months in Oz ...

Got a few comments on how I sounded Australian sometimes ... Think it might be time to move on soon!

I'm surprised at home I say some words in a Canadian accent....like work, sounds more like werk....it's pretty bad when I've only been here for 5 months!

Scary stuff....Beer is another....me and my girlfriend keep catching each other out!

When I went back to NZ for 3 weeks after 18 months in the UK no one said anything about my accent at all. When I came back to London everyone said I sounded Kiwi. I'm wondering what people here will say after I come back from 6 weeks in NZ/Oz in March Laughing

My co workers still can't understand a word I say after 4 odd years, but even I can tell that I am losing my NZ accent. For some reason it makes everyone think I am from Boston.
