I got a new phone (nothing fancy, just the freebie when you change plans) and went to hook it up to the computer last night to tidy up contacts etc and discovered yet another type of usb plug exists (a couple actually, after I thought "wtf?" and looked on wikipedia), and I don't have it.

So first port of call was tardme. Someone selling "genuine nokia data cables" for $7 + 5 courier. Okay cool. Went to the nokia website to make sure there wasn't a few different types but before that I went to the vodafone website. Same cable: $49.99 Shocked

Anyway cos courier delivery woes (busted intercom and they never wait around anyway) and cos I live near a DSE I thought I'd check to see how much they are there. Not exactly the same cable, but similar: $89.98!!!

WTF?!

Apple cables are worse.

Some places are ridiculous.. Harvey Norman i think? sell there VGA cables for something stupid like $80...

Dick Smith are usually quite good, with their dick smith brand cables... they usually the cheapest i have found.

nah DSE are ridiculous now, minimum $18 for a simple RCA cable heaps more if theyre gold plated. Jaycar and the internet are the last bastions of sane cable prices.

Ah Jaycar! Forgot about them. They have micro-USB to USB leads for $11. Sweet, thanks Smile

micro usb is great - soon almost all cell phones, small cameras, hands free kits etc will have microusb for power and wont supply a stupid power supply that changes each time you get a new cell phone. (tho some will come with adaptor cables).

The result is less packaging, less waste and cheaper cellphones (or more profit for the electronic manufacturers, you choose). Also only having to travel with one adaptor rather than a suitcaseful.
[quote]
wow that is cheap.. i thought $18 was good! obviously not..

i am assuming JB HIFI would also be quite good price? never been into JayCar before.

God all the different size USB's etc can get frustrating at work.. having to constantly deal with clients portable drives etc. I'm always losing cables.

I've got a huge box of genuine Nokia ones here I could have sent you one Wink
[quote]
No, JB Hifi has possibly the most expensive cables, thats how they make their money back from the discounted tvs etc. $190 for a 1.5m HDMI Cable... yeah sure.
[quote]
I'll take you up on that jeff!

Smiley: you didn't think of using bluetooth instead? Although even more expensive if you don't have one already, although on TradeMe they get down to the sub $20 mark.

I did have a bunch of USB BT dongles sitting around but I think I gave my last one away.

I'm so stupid, I never ask my friends for help Sad

I have bluetooth dongle but it appears to have stopped working, I mean, it works, but it can't see any devices and no devices can see it. I did consider it but decided it might be handy to be able to charge the phone at the same time.

Oh actually I've been meaning to ask you about using your SD card reader to undelete some pics too Kris, I think lee mentioned it to you?

Whoa! Shocked

Emailed jeff :>

Smiley: Yeah can do - it's built into laptop though.
[quote]
Got it Kris.

Smiley if its the 3120 or 2730 (which I'm assuming it is) then it won't charge over USB anyway
[quote]
Yeah got me a SD card that you slide a micro SD into which is bloody useful. Infact it was the primary reason I got myself a new Nokia with microSD
[quote]
yeah noticed it wont charge... oh well not a big deal.

Bit annoyed that every time I change anything about a contact in PC suite it re-syncs the entire list. Want it to not sync until I'm done.
