im contemplating upgrading to the 256/128/unlimited but i kinda feel bad going back to xtra...

The people I know in wellington that have cable rate it as a much better service than ADSL......

Man, I reckon we need some power companies to start utilising the ability to send data over the power lines.

there's a whole lot of issues with sending data over powerlines... to the point where it may not ever happen...

that's a pretty sweet deal... but the bandwidth cap will catch you pretty quick

ask the poeple that support it how much they like it

and yeah i would probably get it if i could, it does have its limitations as far as capcity goes though, ie lots of people in your area with cable = shit dl speeds and ping.

id say wireless is the way of the future rather than power lines - its just a question of which wireless theres quite a few looking to be the market leader and it would be good if a few of them would just get together and sort thier shit out.

Yes, currently there is. But as technology in the power grid improves and old transformers etc are replaced, it may become a viable alternative in the future.

we've chewed through the 10GB bandwidth cap on a couple of occasions, mind you, we do have 4 computers sharing the connection and we did get a whole lot of stuff in the months that we did go over...

Wired Country is also putting 6 nodes on the Sky Tower, so if you're within 6 km's (with Line of Sight) then you'll soon be able to get 2 meg wireless for around about a hundy. I'll be going for the 65 buckish 1meg connection.


Also, Gasp are gonna be offering a similar wireless broadband solution shortly to the westies. I am iffy about the whole "Shit connection when it rains" factor, but I'll give it a whirl and see how she goes.

I think I'm still paying $59 per month on 5GB on Xtra Jetstream for speed of 15kbps

There are still some significant technical problems with this. God i should know, I've looked at twice already.

The lots of people on cable in your area slows your cable down is a bit of a fallacy stemming from when cable was running 'tings in the coal mining towns in America. Modern cable doesnt suffer problems like a badly terminated lan at your mates place back in 97. Even with network problems and poor signal levels you are only going to have problems with upstream. But what would i know

DaFlash, if there's a lot of people on your cable segment all downloading at high speeds, wouldn't this slow you down? I guess it depends on the capacity of each cable loop, and how many customers are on it.

Telecom ADSL sucks donkey balls. I'd pay more for high speed access, but since I want higher than a 1GB cap i'm stuck down on 256kbps. Once standards like WiMax come along prices might drop - as I understand it it's quite fast and one tower will cover a wide area.

man cable in auckland would be awesome with the plans they offer, less than a year to go though till its a reality it seems

heh i probably wouldnt get it though unless it goes unlimited or same with dsl if u go over ur 10GB then it just slows down but no extra charges.

on my 128k used to do about 28GB upload and 22GB download per month, now im on 256k but it slows down to 64k after 10GB cap so lets see what happens
