Xtra email issues?

Kinda putting all their eggs in one basket with only having one MX record for the domain.

I didn't know you could have more than one... I think I need to read up on the DNS system, especially because I have a couple of domains. Does anyone have any good links/tutorials?

pop3.xtra.co.nz 110 ok
smtp.xtra.co.nz 25 ok
mta.xtra.co.nz 110 ok
mta.xtra.co.nz 25 broken

A secondary mail server is a must .
If your primary falls over, whos there to catch the mail.

I have a primary in nz, and then my backup in the us.

Works quite nicely.

You should definitely have more than one, like so:

MX 10 mta.xtra.co.nz
MX 20 mta2.xtra.co.nz

Even though Xtra have spent millions of dollars on a mail system, they still break from time to time..

Do a google for dns for beginners, learning dns, learning bind, stuff like that.

I have shared hosting, so I don't have that much control. I don't have a 2nd server that mail could fail-over to anyway. To be honest if mail's down for a little while it's not too bad, it all turns up eventually when the sending MTA resends it.

I guess xtra think that there service will "never" go offline
