Hey guys.

Got a little problem. I got 3 computers networked up now computer 1 to computer 2 can talk to each other sahre the internet,files..etc

BUT from either one of the win2k computers to the XP computer I can do all that stuff... but Its REAL!!! slow Internet is fine but file sharing, ftp within the network works just like 0.5kb per sec. the cards are running on 10 mbs.

Any Ideas ? got me stumped

What network protocols do you have installed? Switched or hub? How's it connected to the internet?

Internet------win2k(Dialup sharing)-----hub-------xp computer

protocols are
Tcpip
File/Printer Sharing
Client for MS network
QoS Packet Schedular

You could try adding the other network protocol - winBios is it? It should all work perfectly with TCP but you never know.

One of the xp tips sites might help, as might google.

not sure - but on pinciple turn off QoS

try the old turn off and unplus from the wall trick - let the electrons fade away - i have an onboard network card that persistently fucks up when i reboot - i unplug the power and leave it for 20 minutes and it comes back. It happens under linux too.

I changed the NIC is well but still same thing.... hhmmm could it be the pci slot ?

I'll give it a go when I get home

thanks all

Check that you haven't got the XP Firewall switched on for the Local Area Connection. In theory, it shouldn't work at all, but it is a funny beast.

Also, is the internet sharing computer providing DHCP? Is the XP computer set to Automatically Obtain IP Address? If it wasn't the internet shouldn't work on the XP machine, but you never know.

...lol at kris... you know I wouldnt use a windows firewall....LOL

as for DCHP yeah thats the way. the internet is working fine on the xp box... just fucking slow

Heh, yeah I know that, but it is something that has caught me out a few times, when it decides to switch it on for the LAN connection for no good reason.

yea there is something strange about 2000 and xp

my mate had 2000 and our file transfer was very slow, but it worked fine between our xp computers. what about just upgrading the 2000 to xp??

i hate usin 2000 for networking cause my copy when u transfer files the time is like 6401616523hours or somethin even if it only takes a few minutes.
and ftp doesnt work any faster between the computers?like 5kbps?

put the xp disk in the 2000 machine and run the networking wizard

(or you might have to copy it onto a floppy...)

sometimes a fresh start will help and if theyre running the saem set up version then it might help
[quote]
i wouldnt think running the networking wizard would make a difference its just configuring the same things u would do manually Razz

you have a better suggestion?

Try the standard windows problem solvers - reboot a few times, or reinstall.

I know a few people who might be able to help, i'll ask them and get back to you.

the xp networking wizard reinstals the whole networking system (and upgrades it to the XP versions) and sets the correct settings...
