Yeah I remember that being a popular explanation for the phenomenon and was especially true in the case of The Chem's and lead to that hilarious soundbite that Fatboy Slim included on his You've Come A Long Way Baby album.
Also on your related tangent, I was playing songs for a friends wedding (whhhhy did I break my golden rule?) a few weeks back and a guy came up to me to complain (as they always do) that the music I was playing was gay. His exact words were: "What the fuck is this faggot shit. This is fucking gay." I turned around and said: "Great! The gay people know the best music to dance to!" The look of pure disgust and puzzlement he gave me...
