I was having a listen to the new Laurent Garnier RA podcast , which is fantastic!
But,
Theres a track on there, EC50: Jonestown http://www.coincidencerecords.be/sounds/FN003_003.mp3
That kinda made me feel a bit sick.
It’s a very good techno track with a vocal by Jim Jones, the guy who led the mass suicide over 900 men, women and children in Guyana in 1978 by putting cyanide in the koolaid.
I’m all for a dark vocal on a track but I really don’t think this is on.
It’s the speech he used to fire everybody up for this, which was done at gunpoint, not some moody villain from a movie… but an actual mass murderer!
How would people feel about a minimal track with one of Hitlers speeches on it?
Or Ted Bundy yarning about killing someone?

This is has straight up ruined the mix for me as all I can picture during that track is the impending deaths of these 900 people and it makes me feel a bit sick. You can hear a childs voice in the vocal sample which made me feel even worse as they were murdered not long after this recording….

How is this in any kind of spirit of house/techno??
Is mass murder the nu cool?
The imagery they are producing with this is quite sick….
Has anyone else noticed this?
[quote]
Yeah mate that's pretty sick. How did you spot that? I'm all for a twisted vocal but that's a bit too twisted.
[quote]
dark vocals are good but I have been at a gig once where the DJ played a track with a baby crying in it

I'm not keen on dancing happily to the sound of a distressed child, just doesn't turn my crank

I left the dancefloor briefly but it was a bit much for me and I just couldn't get back into a nice groove after that so I left the club, total killer Neutral
[quote]
I heard something about a congressman and an aeroplane crash….
I only noticed on the second run thru.
Its something I have read about that left me in a state of shock and dismay…. So some details have stuck with me

Yeah Snowy, that would be bad. But I’m sure the kids mummy gave it a hug and a feed after that….
Not killed it and herself afterwards.

I doubt this tune will be `bringing ya pill on’

I was loving that podcast till you dropped the name "Jim Jones" into our chat and I dug up the track in question.

Seems a bit off the mark that they seem to be promoting the track on that tip as well.....http://www.residentadvisor.net/forum-read.aspx?id=40071

Now I'm really struggling to get past it......which is a shame cause apart from that track the Garnier podcast is well wikkid.

quite funny you say that as I remember shuffling from side to side and hoping that it would eventually move on to the sound of mummy coming in with a comforting kiss and a cuddle but it didn't and it just kept on going

so it's not like I wasn't willing to give it a try or anything

I had to boycott his gig in Tokyo last night because of this! It's not on! He shoulda gone for some booty bass or something.

Hi Snowflake Wave
[quote]
yet to check the track out

...my thoughts prior to doing so are -bad taste probably but not sure I'd go as far as saying its wrong
[quote]
Had a a couple of listens through this weekend and that one particular track isn't house at all.

But Laurent does redeem himself by dropping Middlewodd Sessions "Fall Back" towards the end of the mix - couldn't escape that tune last summer.
[quote]
I'd like to know his reasons before getting emo about it
[quote]
Pfffft.... you house fassys just can't handle ya techno.

Very Happy

Websta, prepare yourself:

Berghain/Panorama
Richie Hawtin
Ricardo Villalobos
Apparat (live)
Mia
Shed (live)

Sheesh.... and they are premeiering the new Funktion One 6.1 soundsystem.
I hear you say "but Matt, why wasn't their last rig enough?"
And all I can say is "cos it's Berlin."

I wanna see 100 house squats, 50 techno situps and 30 tribal pullups each day before you arrive.... and a minimal milkshake to top off the training.

Oh and: DC10

Crying or Very sad
[quote]
DC10, Bora Bora and Amnesia were all closed down last season but re-opened soon after.

The police have to be seen to be doing something about the drogas so they make a few headlines by closing some clubs and once the media attention dies down then the club(s) re-open because without the clubs and the drogas there is no Ibiza.

I'd imagine DC10 will be open soon, just not soon enough for some.

i am ready!
been jogging daily so my stamina is high, it will need to be!
Micarl and I are off to see Bonnie Price on the wed too!
weekend should be ok i suppose....

yeah dc10 will open the week after i arrive back.

yes but.

What if you didn't know this?

you know the track in question sits wickedly in the podcast.... it sounds great.... but it is in super bad taste

the sample has not been used with any respect to the source of the sample, the track does nothing to address the issue it samples from, it neither condemes nor condones that tragedy

its a fluff piece as one expects in a dancefloor driven environment, which in itself to me denotes a careless and idiotic use of this sample

if the track was made to acknowledge this tragic event and the serious wrong doings of religious nutbars et al then I'd defend it big time - I like political statements... and feel music is a valid form with which to make such statements but in this tracks case it is simply wrong as that is not the purpose of the track - or if so its been done real badly

in short - shit track due to bad use of a controversial vocal sample
[quote]
At least it doesn't use an Obama speech.

There's a few of those knocking about at present.

fuck obama the white cunt

I'm just glad we don't get Kool Aid here

shit track to you but has two things going for it that you must acknowledge as a result of it

1. this thread isn't spam and it's in the House forum
2. it's garnered over 400 views
[quote]
agreed - tis great to see some actual points of view on this music we love... thanks to a track that a provokes passionate response and thought due to the content of said track

perhaps the forum has some life in it after all Smile

It's murder on the dancefloor, but you better not kill the groove.

*gets coat*

Oh shit, and I just realised the Sat night at Berghain/Panorama... pretty much the second installment of the who's who of technotronic clubmusik:

Berghain/Panorama

Cobblestone Jazz (live)
The Mole
Konrad Black
Deadbeat (live)
Cassy
Rolando
DJ Pete
Len Faki
Moritz von Oswald feat. Paul St. Hilaire

I think we may as well set up some sleeping bags in the corner of the beer garden there, no doubt we won't be leaving any stage that weekend.
[quote]
Don't think you'll need to worry about the sleeping bags, the lotion rubdown sessions in the basement should keep everyone warm.

PVC is also quite good at retaining heat, although the assless chaps could get a bit breezy.

Hi everyone...Im Adam, one half of EC50...

now i understand that this track has caused negative feelings, the last thing as a producer wants, and i understand the fact that some people dislike the un representative manner in which we made this track.

Our intention was simply to make a track, and these vocals worked for us, because they are powerful. To be honest, this track sold a lot, so many djs, and top djs appreciated this, so that in itself is important for me.

IIn retrospect, i do feel tht if i were to make a track with these vocals, i should have handled it with more care. I also feel that, as an artist, i will make art which doesnt always conform as this is the artform which is in me. Im not sorry about this. but i do understand why one may take offence.

peace to you all Smile

[quote]
well, seeing as no one else is going to comment on this, i will.

biggup for coming in here and telling your side of this. tbh, i didnt find the tune that offensive. music should push boundaries. imo, any form of art can be judged a success if it gets people talking. by using the vocal you did, i believe you have done just that. i can understand that it may upset some, but i also dont believe we are put on this earth to live within a set of stoic rules or to tip-toe around sensitivities. those who find success usually find it by pushing the envelope, in an artistic capacity anyway.

i missed this thread when it was started, its interesting to see how people feel about this subject. should these things be taboo? i dont think so. although this hasnt been a classic "ode to..", i think that this tune can serve as a reminder of the tragedy. whos to say it cant be expressed in this way?

just my 2c anyway.

and, oh hai house forum, you are awfully quiet.. and i have missed yous. Smile

How much did Mike pay you?

[quote]
Hi HL!
Bacon bacon, deathstar!
[quote]
Had this ready to purchase for a while but never thought I'd get to use it. Eerie little track though!
[quote]

lol @ shaveer.. do you think i should have garnered payment before posting? it boiled down to not being able to bite my tongue any longer. besides, the house forum isnt biggie.. so spike pointed out to me. Razz
