I was surfing the net and came across a couple of websites that you can apply to work to work on a cruise ship through. I thought it sounded really great.

However just wondering if anyone has or knows somebody who has ever worked on a cruise ship and what they thought of it?

Thanks in advance

I have a good friend friend who has worked and still working on a cruise ship as a beauty therapist.
Shes raking it in due to not having to pay any taxes. Most of her earning are made through tips but, she works bloody hard.

From what I understand, she went to any interview in Auckland and got trained in London before being placed on a ship.

Also, some ships will do random drug testing.

Well rom what i was told...mostly, it's pretty good money, due to it being tax-free and with tips. However Baynsey is right, it is very hard work, usually 10 and sometimes up to 12 hour days, 6 days a week and if you're not in the bar/resturant then you don't get much of the tips (i.e. who'd want to be a cleaner?)

Also a big thing to remember is you don't usually get your own cabin - you can be sharing with at least one and usually 4 or more people for 6 months.

Really it's all about your previous experience. if you're a career hospo person then you're in with a good chance of a good ship, and really good pay.

I had some friends who were dancers that were recruited for 6 months and they all did quite well, both in the bank and, um, in the bed! Mr. Green

Where do I start?

I've been working on a cruise ship for the past 8 months and it's been a little like this:

Double room with a double bed (no sharing)
Room stuard cleans my floor, bathroom, room, fresh towels & makes my bed on a daily basis.
I can eat anywhwhere / anytime (including with the Captain & including Lobster once a week)
Tax Free & no outgoing expenses
Travel the world (Hawaii, Alaska, US East Coast, US West Coast, Caribbean including some dozen countries etc...)
Made incredible new friends
Got laid by hot young college girls up to 30 year old Professionals
Worked approx 20 hours a week
Got off in all the ports
Wicked tan
Went diving in some of the best spots in the Caribbean (including with Sting Rays in the Cayman Islands)
$1 Beers in the crew bar
PHD in Drinking (7 nights a week for 8 months)
Made some fantastic money...

Good work if you can get it.....

Yes and I'm sorry I actually exadurated a little on my earlier post....

CORRECTION: I don't work 20 hours, but I'll be doing about 12 hours per 7 days....

Soon I'm off to a VIP party where I'll be sipping on Champagne and will be schmoozing with all the top spenders. I know, I know... Tough job but I think I'm just the man for it...

Wouldn't you agree D-Man?

Its pretty obvious your not the average cruise ship worker. Whats your position?

Almost everyone I know who has done it for a season or so says they would not go back.

Basic info I have recieved:
If your crew then your a maggot and dont get shit. (waiter/cleaner etc)
If your staff then you get all the luxuries & priveledges. (beauty therapist/restaurant manager etc)

Pay isnt that great but it weighs out as you have no way to spend it and free accomodation/food.

Basically its not for everyone. But give it a whirl, whats 6 months out of your life for a trial.

I have heaps and heaps of info on it.... was going to do it a few years ago, and now have decided that this is the time. I'm going to be starting to send out applications soon.

There are heaps of websites you can order info books from, or sign up as a member to read all the ins and outs (at a cost though).

Have spent hours and hours looking around different sties - i really think you need to do your research and be prepared as you can.

My cousin worked on a cruise ship as a beauty therapist. She didn't like it much - the job was commission only... she didn't make much money.

Well i now have a job on a cruise ship!!!

Only thing is i have to leave in a week!!

Working as Junior Assistant Cruise Director and will be travelling around aussie, vanuatua, fiji, new caledonia etc.
Would have probably preferred to be in a more exotic location but this is such an awesome opportunity.

My advice for anyone wanting to get into it, do your research and stick at it as something will happen for you!!

I've been browsing these forums for a while now and just came across this post, coincidentally I've been looking at a cruise ship job as well, and just finished applying at www.seabourncareers.com.

I've read quite a bit about it and geoffy's job situation is definitely uncommon compared to most experiences I've read! The most probable way that kind of position is available is if you're of a good degree level and can speak 2-3 languages. As many job roles require long hours, it's worth anyone interested in a cruise ship job to look into the retail sector onboard as working in the duty free or gift shop inherently involves not as long work periods.
