So who has it? Im considering it but would like to hear some user testimonials to help me decide. Specifically does anyone have any experience with it using iChat AV video conference on mac and can report on its performance.

Had it (dont have a computer @ home any more tho) but it was fucken sweet, you'll get about 25% of people say it was shit and 75% say it worked fine for them.



Mac can be a bit of a bitch to get going, but it works

I've never used it personally, but know enough about it and have had friends that have used it. I dont think it'd suit video conferencing because it has terribly unstable latency, anywhere from 80ms to 1000ms.

I got it for my boss yesterday... not too bad. Was downloading at about 6-12kbps.

So pretty much the same as a 9600 modem from 15 years ago?

i have it and get 25kbps on a good day.

That's quite pathetic. I get 256kbps on the medium jetstream connection quite reliably when downloading.

Or did you mean 25kBps? (bytes rather than bits)

I think he means bytes rather than bits. I was gonna say something, but it's such a common mistake that people make I assumed everyone would know what he meant.

My experience with it wasn't good. Had it in a flat in grafton with full signal and it still dropped something chronic, downloads were at 256k for the first month then seemed to drop to sub 128k speeds after that. After a few months i took it to my current place on newton road and the service got worse dropping out everytime someone stood on the deck and about every hour if there was no one there. Dont see the point of paying $60 for 7 gig of traffic (that was the reasonable usage limit when i had it) at jetstart speeds that disconnected every hour.

Ill would have jetstream or even try wired country if your in the CBD

love it, easy to set up and has been really reliable

yeh a friend said the latency was terrible , no good for online gaming....

no good for online gaming because it only uploads at around dial-up speed.

its great for downloading though - and you get a 1 month trial anyways - so you can see whether your setup and location is good for it.

still have to buy the modem though

i have that on the 10GB limit, i have already hit that as of last night and i was playing cs today, couldnt get a ping under 250, and download speeds quite slow so they definately wernt lying when they said it MAY drop to 64kbps, i think they should have made the 'may' a 'WILL'

im seriously considering switching back to 128k unlimited, at least its consistant

heh btw anyone else notice with 256k as soon as it drops to 64k ur ip address is actually in a different set of numbers? interesting.....

nah they havent got the hardware in to knock you down to 64kb, today they were broken, problems all over the place apparently.

ahhh sweet as, maybe thats why i coudlnt get into nz dc hub's. it said i needed an NZ ip
i went over my cap last night and when i got back up this morning my ip address was completely different

Theyve released a whole lot of new ips and it caused problems somewhere.

you were probably assigned a new ip that the dc hubs dont recognise.

yea it wouldnt be in the ip list since they are nz only hubs so require an nz ip but talk about annoying, i dont see how that should effect my speed....

there was an issue today with a new range of ip's thats why you were going slow.... you should find that it will be back up to 256k soon

they havent started the limiting yet and it only affected people off a certain RAN.

Thats sweet dude i was worried that was what my further capped speed would be i was pretty worried there and seriously gonna go back to 128k if that was the case, but ill test the internet when i get home

I've been using it for about 3 weeks now after having JetStream for a year, and I'm about to ring up and connect up to JS again (new house). It's awful.

Given I work during the day I use it at night. On an average to good day I get around 150kbps, JS used to be consistent at around 230 - 260kbps.

The connection drops off at least twice a night, the speed varies quite substantially. On Sunday my speed was down to 9kbps (that's about 1 fifth of a dial-up modem).

Sometimes when the connection drops off it requires a system reboot to reconnect.

And for a wireless modem it has a large amount of cables.

You can't play online games, well you can but the latency is so bad you'll get spanked. So I can't imagine other low latency apps would work well either - e.g. vid conf.

Given my JS connection never dropped off and I could use it for gaming and webcaming I'm going back as soon as I can.

im looking at getting Jetstream 256K plan on a 3 gig limit. Problem is I don't really have any idea whether that would be enough for my purposes. I do download quite a few mp3s and the odd movie. What do you people reckon ? Is 3GB enough or should I be going with the 128K flat rates or should I go to the 256K 10 GB limit ?

The 10GB plan is what, $20 per month more? If you can afford it then yeah, definitely get it. I have it, and my PC at home is download all sorts of stuff as we speak

I really do miss 2Mbit though - things downloaded SO MUCH more quickly. When telecom brings out a 10GB 2Mb plan i'll be the first one on it, so long as it costs less than about $150/month. I dunno why it isn't out already actually.

Yeah I guess i should go for the 10Gb limit...im just having a hard time justifying the $70 odd a month on internet charges to the missus : ) haha

yea definately go for the 10gb if your going to be downloading mp3's and a few movies. its amazing how fast it goes, i used mine by the 10th April but its still going hard at 32kB/s, no extra charges after the 10gb limit.
If it is a bit much (i share mine with my bro) then go for the flatrate 128k, i reckon it will work out better than the 256k with 3gb

32kbps? its 64kbps minimum, but they havent slowed me down yet and im on about 18gb for the month

They might not have hardware to stop you, but they could impose limits for the top 10% perhaps, or even like 2%.
