This case is bloody sad.. why'd it take so long to sort out?

Anyway - the article makes a great point. Why not come to NZ, claim all manner of stuff which would get you executed back home and then make sure it gets lots of publicity (and on the radar back home)... as is the case here... This ensuring your need for asylum?

Good plan from his lawyer me thinks.

I worry about NZ's innate ability to perfect the art of taking relatively straight-forward things and making them into expensive and years-long processes... only to ultimately reach the common sense decision.

Immigration officials allegedly forced their way into a house and took photos of a 5-year-old boy so they could send him to China with his overstaying parents.

The family's immigration agent, Tuariki Delamere, has lodged a police report accusing immigration officials of unlawful entry, assault and fraud.

Saw that too. In those situations it should be totally clear cut: out on the next plane. They have no issues back home other than probably lower earnings potential. Both parents are low skilled and working as painters. Their situation also indicates they came here with the intention to stay despite their visas.

Out on the next plane.

Delamere is the Chris Comesky of immigration matters - he'd dodgy at the best of times. When he's involved something fishy (but probably just legal) is at foot. The only reason this has made news is Delamere calling the paper. I bet the real story is significantly different from their version of events.
