wireless net set up advice? pleeease :D

hey

i recently bought a laptop and getting the net set up at home for first time, yippee!

there is a phone line at home but it's not connected, i am thinking of just going for naked dsl through snap - recommended?

also i would like to be able to use the net around the house so i will need a wireless router/modem thingy right?

they have them through snap for $180, is that standard price or are there places to get them cheaper? what to look for etc?

any advice for a n00b like me appreciated

No idea who Snap is looks like just another mickey mouse player around town so I would stay away from them. Orcon / Maxnet and well if you like slow speeds Xnet is the recommended ISP's around here.

That $180 for the Linksys modem is pretty standard and its a good modem.

Unless you have specific requirements, just get whatever wifi modem the ISP you go with sells, makes for MUCH easier support when you need it.

I haven't heard bad things about Snap, but I haven't heard anything good about them either.

Snap are based in ChCh, I found about them through work - we can get some sweet deals with them so seems like a good idea. I guess I'll find out first hand what they're like soon & go with their modem thingy if that's standard.

I remember Snap, from memory they're not bad where they have concentrated service eg Palmerston North, Chch.

They'll be able to provide better support for one you purchase through them, rather than one you buy off the shelf and configure yourself.
