So I bought a Linksys WAG160N last year, after hearing Lynksys was really good.

http://www.linksysbycisco.com/ANZ/en/products/WAG160N

Recently I bought a new HP laptop DV6 series (cant remember exact model number atm)

... but now I'm having weird connection issues. When I first turn the laptop on it will only link automatically approx. 1 out of 100 times, and it just says 'limited connectivity' or sommin.

So then I have to either turn the wireless button off, wait and turn it on again... or disconnect and try reconnecting (by way of the icon bottom right of screen), or restart my laptop... usually I have to do all of these quite a few times then all of a sudden it will connect.

...ooooor it wont, and then i have to turn the router off and wait 10 seconds, turn it on and its fine.

But it happens everytime i turn my laptop on!!

FUCK ITS SOOOOO FUCKIN FRUSTRATING!!!

If I go to other peoples house and use their wireless it always connects straight away... my flatmates use Macs and they have no problems, but Rachel also has an HP and she has the same issues I am having.

It is set to WPA personal and I'm wondering if I change it to WEP that would help... or something??

Anything???!??!?!

Anyone have any ideas?... I'm well Noob at this sort of ting.

thanks.

oh and I should add, when it does connect, it works really really well... like good speed and stuff.

WAG160N IS A POS! End of story, see if you can sell it to some fool on Trademe and get something else. Thats no jokes ever, I have never had some many issues with a router before in my life.

I have tried everything from new firmware, not using WPA or WEP, upgrading and downgrading laptop nics drivers the whole shabang!

We only use HP laptops at work and we all have the same problem with this router. I upgraded to a Netgear AP and its working sweet now.

I have no idea what this means... but will check (with instructions) when I'm home tonight...

I also found this which may have the answer:

http://forums.linksysbycisco.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=DSL&message.id=5550

... sounds like maybe some issues with Vista...?

I'm also ment to upgrade to Windows 7 so should do that too.

Just had a quick look.... I'd say this may be your best bet - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us

Give that a go and see...

Upgrading to 7 did help any of us. Changing to G only seems useless to me cause it means everyone else thats can support the faster N connection is now being held back by a shitass router.

I'll just add that I don't think changing it to G will work either. It sounds like it connecting fine to the router, but the "Limited Connection" thing you're getting would suggest it's not getting it's IP address assigned by the DHCP server on the router. Which is why I reckon you try my link above first.
[quote]
Yeah it was a outside shot.

Spike what I usually see in those cases is that Vista's shitty connection dealio does a DNS lookup to confirm if it's got a connection or not, and it's that that fails. It has wifi link, it has IP, it just THINKS it doesn't have internet.

However, yeah, have heard more than a few shit things about this particular router so I'd lean towards replacing it if the suggestions in that thread cam found don't work.

throw the 160 in the bin.

ive read every page i can find on it and installed every firmware it has come out with up till about 2 months ago. I had problems with both a xp and a vista laptop.

I even tried to return it and got a complete run around from linksys.

back to a standard wireless g router that just works - i know other people who have done the same.

Told you your router was shit cam. Laughing
[quote]
well, just to keep you all updated, Rachel managed to update the routers firmware, and it seems to be working perfectly now...

thank fuck!!!

so you IT guys all fail, you have let me down... and your selves down... for shame!

Embarassed

[quote]
WELL FUCK IT!!!

LOOKS LIKE I SPOKE TOO SOON!!!

were you using HP too?... or is it PC specific?

Cos my flatmates both have Mac laptops and they have no problems with it at all.

It's really weird!!

Still wondering if the Windows 7 Upgrade will help.

Nah dont have an iphone jbs.
[quote]
Shame.

No W7 upgrade won't help and cream won't fix it tonight.

Problem was with a dell and then an HP. XP, Vista and Win7.

The wired desktops had no problems but i guess i didnt wait round long enough for the DHCP renew on them once i had a problem.

If the laptop is always at home you could try assigning a manual ip or a program that sets different ip settings depending on the location (my toshiba had this feature).

But still it had problems and i just gave up.
