i'm n00b++ regarding wireless

is what i need to add wireless to an existing wired network ie it just plugs in to a switch?

http://www.linksysbycisco.com/EU/en/products/WAP610N

and does that particular unit offer the spec for decent speed and security?

Nothing wrong with that one in particular, I bought it for my dads place and no complaints.

Anything that calls itself an access point should just plug into the switch and work (once youve set the security on it). All you should be looking for is WPA2 security though if you have some old old equipment you might want WPA as well.

If you dont have a large place wifi G might be suitable though it is slower for file transfers and video. Might save some $$. Linksys are ok generally but I have certainly found a few problems. Netgear are another that are worth considering.

Security is basically identical across all of them.

Bob: bear in mind G is near worthless these days in built up areas.

Linksys are usually fine, I however use Apple AirPort Extreme's wherever I can these days. Pricey though.

Yeah I like the airport, especially for being able to send audio through it (and hook a usb printer in if you wanted).

Re G - yeah I looked at our area in the weekend. From none to 40 in 2 years. I dont have any problem getting reception on G but I know the wifes older laptop has issues.
