it keeps your computer healthy. you don't need to know much more. just keep clicking 'yes' or 'install' or 'download' or whatever seems compliant and going with the flow-ish

And people wonder how worms and viruses spread.

"it" will often come up for air, best technique is to gently motion her head back down to its working place, and enjoy the ride.

Pervert, not quite spWare but close enough,
they contain security patches chiefly, but also
open new holes too, so they give with one hand
and take with the other. Off topic it's interested
me that windows allow you to see the world,
and the world to see you, with your pants down,
trying to pop the pimples on your hairy bottom. Shocked
Sometimes these things are huge 300Mb or so,
that aught to keep you connected for two weeks on a
56K. Mr. Green <<<microsoft/galactihard.
They just keep patching&patching, why not completely
recompile for once. Perhaps it's another good argument for
open source code. Lindows anyone? Oh and dont start me
on animated puppy dogs. Maybe hundreds of network admin's
lobbied for years to get those put in. Neutral

Patches are unrelated to compilation. A clean build of the same code would make the same software with the same bugs. They could do a complete build of windows and let you download it, but it'd be far larger, harder to install, and have no advantages over patching.

Patches are upgraded software, the source code is compiled by/at M$ then applied to your PC using windows update.

Oh OK, not really my department as U can C.
The recompilation was referring to Win as a whole, I should have been more concise. (Did I spell that right?, Oh well.)
I heard a rumour somewhere that WinXP contains old code that goes right
back to Win3.1 & DOS. They kept bringing out these "new" versions of windows which in essence were just patched over old versions with patches to defeat older patches which to me seems like building a rickety
teetering structure out of materials that cant possibly support each other. In purely engineering terms this is a patently bad idea.
That naturally set me to thinking (impotently) that they should have started from scratch.<shrug> I dont really know.
As for downloading an entire version of windows, that would be like a Denial Of Service attack in the reverse direction.
The update is a good idea I guess but check the file sizes before clicking that button.
There is a freeCD for this SP2 update for those of us on 56k hook-ups.
Whew. 2nd rant ends.
