Interesting, taking a different angle to Apple by making it more data-centric rather than app-centric. Will be very interested to have a play, I rather like that interface. Lets hope it's as big a leap over Win Mobile 6 as Win 7 is over everything prior. Seems to be.

I like they way they are handling the handset issue too:
quote:
Another way the old Windows Mobile is dead is how Microsoft's handling partners and hardware situation. With Windows Mobile, a phonemaker handed Microsoft their monies, and Microsoft tossed them a software kit, and that was that. Which is why a lot of Windows Mobile phones felt and ran like crap. And why it took HTC like two years to produce the HD2, the most genuinely usable rendition of Windows Mobile ever.

Microsoft's not building their own phones, but they're going to be picky, to say the least, with Windows Phone 7. Ballmer phrases it as "taking more accountability" for people's experiences. There's a strict set of minimum hardware requirements: a capacitive, multitouchable screen with at least four points of touch; accelerometer; 5-megapixel camera; FM radio; and the like. There are serious benchmarks that have to be met. And only chosen OEMs get to build the phones now, not like before, when anybody with $20 could get a license. The OEMs that Microsoft's announcing they're working with at launch are: Qualcomm, LG, Samsung, Garmin Asus, HTC, HP, Dell, Sony Ericsson, and Toshiba. AT&T's their "premiere partner" in the US (dammit). (Take note people! Premiere does not mean exclusive!)

Every phone will have a Bing (search) button and a Start button. Custom skins, like the minor miracles HTC worked, are now banned. The message to hardware makers is clear: It's a Windows Phone, you're just putting it together. Basically, phonemakers get to decide the shape of the phone, and whether or not there's a keyboard.

Seems to be getting a bunch of positive reviews so far.

Yeah, this is definitely one to watch out for, initial reviews are saying that it genuinely kicks the iPhone in the teeth. The iPhone is clearly the best phone on the market today (needless troll, I know, but even if you don't agree, millions would) but I would really like to give iTunes the flick.

I think my phone contract comes up for renewal in july this year, but I don't think this is due to hit OZ until christmas

Horrible as far as I can tell.

cant be any worse than the current. We use HTC Snaps on XT and the guys are abandoning them and using their own ones.

To be honest for business use it totally looks worse than the current! Everything abstracted under multiple eye-candy layers. Ugh. Although I admit business is probably not the target market.

Anyway I'm sure they have lots of work to do and hopefully will ease up on the transitions and decorations.

I'd hardly call that "hidden". The way it handles calendar stuff for example looked awesome.

Also eye candy rules. Razz

Components look cool. I just think they are going a bit too far out.

Time will tell.

We're living in the future now son. No more room for boring ugly shitty UI's.

I mean, people said the same about the jesusPhone when that came out too.

They did. I just don't think this will fly.

Either it will be a suckfest, or it will be OK and Apple will blast it with a new iPhone UI.

Lets meet back here in 10 months and see shall we?

Yup, and my N96 is starting to get annoyingly slow. No more faith in Symbian. I'll probably look at one of these when they come out.

when I get sick of my iPhone, this will be the next upgrade, haha

I really can't see Apple vastly changing the iPhone UI. Besides, changing it to be more like this isn't Apple's style.
