There's always a 'new' sound, or a 'trendy' type of dance music. However, apart from the usual elitism etc associated with certain genres, there's no 'new' thing coming through. Prog never quite made it, and even international DJ's are not really aiming in any one direction.

Not meaning to sound like a sheep, but I'm interested in what people think will be the 'next big thing'? Or is this it?

The new Gatecrasher is going kinda hard, italian techno-ish. Woohoo

prog is doin ok just not mainstream enough for the masses

that italian techno sound is kinda cool

Whatever sounds good to the dance fans ear I say.

I love the sound of prog...twisted dark beats...but I have to agree its going nowhere now. I'm finding most of the new prog releases pretty dull going...but good for relaxing chill-out music. Renegade a few weeks ago was interesting....the music sounded kinda hollow in Jones' Bar...I think one needs a beast of a club with superb sound, lighting and atmos to really pull off the full twisted progressive sound.

I want chugging, fat funky beats.....that sound good. A hybrid of Dutch funk, some Trance thrown in for good measure...and lots of twisted shit.....

But verging on the harder side...but not too much.

Hard funk is probably what I mean...with a smooth rhythm.

It will be trance, but with a bit of a Country & Western flavour.

harder house.

personally i think that the prog sound with a break beat is where i would like to continue seeing the dance music that i like heading

in know its kinda old but the breaks version of ubik by timo maas for example.

totally agree with turnmills on the dark tribal sound. steve lawler stylee.

lee burridge and the tyrant boyz are making some nice shit.

damn double posts

Nahhhhhh

That's been done! Take Nick Warren's set for example, and the crowd reactions to the different styles. The brokenbeat prog was a bit of a fizzler, but the more techno-ey faster shit had many a rump shakin'.

Guess I answered my own question for myself then, but I still wann ahear what everyone thinks, and more importantly, why they think it. Harder house Bliss? Is this what you reckon or what you want? Very Happy

well if britain is anything to go by, garage and cheese-step will be taking over the mainstream here shortly... although, I think we may have missed that bus (thank goodness).

breakbeats are good. bring the funk! fo'real. Very Happy
perhaps a lil' variety in bassline would be nice - time for the off-beat-b-line to take a back seat in my opinion.

whaddayoothink?

Though really, as a very wise Karl Francis once said on a groovy lil' doco called "Talking Headz"

"Bring all the flavas. We've gotta keep all the flavas and just keep all the flavas. Keep the funky flavas, keep the electro flavas, keep the jazzy flavas.... Cos it's all about the diff'rent flavas, y'know wot i mean?!?"

Dangerous lad that Dillinja.

Very Happy

if u ask me im happy where we are right now. maybe we might be stuck with the genres we have for quite a while. look at disco for example, that didnt change much of a long period of time. i just hope dance music doesnt die like disco. pretty much doubt it will though. n e way disco is making a come back. gotta love funky disco house bob sinclar is the master =)
[quote]
I dunno, but I reckin Disco never died, it just got re-invented as house music. If you listen to most house music it's got the basic disco beat going in there (open hihat, closed hihat) mmp-chhh-ahh-chh-mmp-chh-ahh etc etc.

I reckin in the future people will look back on house music in the same way as we look back on disco now. Agreed thou, disco rocks! Staying Alive may be a terrible song, but the opening few seconds before the vocals come in are just pure class!

I'm a fan of prog, and I'd really like to see it take off more here. I don't think it's gonna happen, but I'd like to see a lot more minimalism in dance music.

If the audience growth at Renegade is a guage,
Prog is the arena where innovation and accessability
meet.
