the title says it all - a lot, if not most of the people i talk to about this seem to think that "techno" only relates to a specific sound, namely the detriot minimalist thing. this is *so* not true. I've been going to techno nights in the UK for years and have hardly heard any detriot style being played there. There's a lot of hard percussive techno around, and a lot of acid techno, all great and none of it sounds remotely like detroit.

the way it works is detroit techno is merely a branch of the big techno tree, but detroit purists like to think of it as the trunk, oh, and by the way, there are no branches on this tree of theirs just their trunk, and anyone who calls their music techno, and it's not from detroit, well, they must be mad or something.... give me a break!

DETROIT MINIMALISM is a funny term, really applies to Rob Hood and about 3 other producers (Dan Bell, Oliver Kapp, Richie Hawtin) and they're not even from Detroit!). Detroit techno is pretty fleshed out: Octave One, Mad Mike/UR, DJ Rolando, Stacey Pullen...
They also do it pretty hard DJ Bone, The Punisher, (Mills!!)... Also if you're not dropping The Metronome on M-Plant, you should - hard 1/4 techno madness at it's best, will show that detroit is where it became hard in the first place Wink

I think I know where you're coming from, but to be honest most people I talk to these days in NZ don't even talk about Detroit really in the hushed reverent tones, Detroit Techno has taken a new meaning (Fabrice Lig, The Youngsters, Technasia) which is more stylistically detroit techno than many from detroit....

I guess what you're trying to say is that Marco Bailey, Marco Carola and Surgeon are all as relevant to techno as Derrick May or Jeff Mills? I don't think you'll find anyone around (at least AK) who'd disagree with you on that!!

I know many of the local tech djs around NZ, and part of my job is to sell them music, while we do sell a shitload of Detroit techno, we also sell a massive about on UK+European techno - and most djs would be playing something like this:
10% US
50% Euro (German, Italian, Belgian, French)
40% UK

Roughly Smile
And the US is broken up between detroit/chicago/ny and beyond too!

Cool to see more passionate disciples around!! Keep it up!

i hardly ever come accross people who make that strict detroit = techno distinction. the people i talk to who are into techno seem educated enough about techno's roots and know that the music truely is a worldwide scene. one years it may favour sweden and another year italy is getting all the attention...
the people i talk to who are not into techno have no idea at all where its roots may be and usualy think dj's like sam hill play techno. maybe someone just used detroit as an example to try and define some style from another. probebly a missunderstanding i guess. no one who is serious about techno can only be into the detroit output, you would have to be quite narrow minded to think that.
so many parts of the world have contributed to the musics ever changing styles that it can only realy be looked on a global scene these days.
i guess all these posts about what it is and isnt realy do come down to personal taste and are purely subjective opinions. its a shame though at how it causes such a stir. i think people may just take other peoples opinion a little personaly and react as if it were some sort of personal attack.
"oh my god, you like acid techno! how dare you think that i might also, you bastered!"
its funny realy. makes me think that some people might be insecure about what they like. not realy worth all the bother.
it has prevoked some worthy replies though and may even bring people closer together in the end, a positive offshot to all the bickering.

I think that there are always misconceptions in the dance scene about techno because it's so hard to pinpoint and yeah, a lot of people may use the term Detroit Techno to differentiate them from the misconceived notion that Sam Hill or OB1 plays techno (see voting forum).

Thats what I've been trying to do with N2O and related events, introduce more people to more genres of hard dance and underground music. When Chelfyn was due to play at Nitro and I mentioned it on here I got a load of shite, on the night itself he suprised people and played a really great acid techno set and the great thing is people loved it.

I guess people hear a style and they have there own misconceptions as to what they think it is. Personally when people mentioned techno to me originally (being a hardcore raver from the UK before I emigrated here in 2001) I always thought of Hardcore Techno with DJs such as Scorpio, Clarke, Mark E-G and Producer - playing in the technodromes or at events such as North in N-E of England. Chelfyn played me some of this "detriot techno" today and I laughed, if thats what people over here generalise techno as then no bloody wonder people label it "shite" before they've actually listened.

If anyones wanting to listen to other aspects of techno such as Funky and Acid then you could always come along to our event '3Some' @ Cube on 20th June, we've got a mixture of DJs playing hard dance with the techno edge being supported by Chelfyn and special guest 'Maya' from Napier. Where basically we're continuing our experiments with introducing more styles of dance music to the masses.

As long as the music is interesting and played by a DJ who makes the crowd interested I think most punters couldn't really tell during a set if it was mixed up individually which tracks are which genres. There are so many styles out there and we need to break away from the "I play this, therefore I have no interest in that" frame of mind

I don't know if you're aware, but detroit techno constantly sells shitloads of records!! Sales for artists such as DJ rolando, octave one, dj assult, and jeff mills - all capable of 100k+ sales wise, and you'd be hard pressed to sell more than a few thousand yoshitoshi 12"s... even folks like okenfold and co have trouble doing that.

It's a wide music that comes from detroit. Techno is also a focus at many of the worlds leading musical fests (Sonar, DEMF, Awakenings, Dance Valley, Love Parade, Mayday...), from the styles that people such as Adam Beyer, Marco Carola, Jeff Mills, Technasia, and Richie Hawtin (who incidently probably created acidtechno) champion.

"When Chelfyn was due to play at Nitro and I mentioned it on here I got a load of shite, on "

I'm not sure if he got shit (or his posts?), or if it was more a discussion on where acidtechno should fall. but most people are more than happy to support anything techno related for sure.

Great work for pushing tech at cube!! Keep it flowing.
