whats with remaking "old" films ??

went saw "lord of the rings" on sat nite, and what do i see but the shorts to "E.T.", its being remade with extra seens and digital sound.. etc.. WTF!!

are we getting that low on "new" ideas for movies that we have to dredge up "old" ones and remake them with the special effects we have today??

im mean.. PSYCHO.. STAR WARS.. JEDI.. STRIKES BACK.. now E.T. and i cant think of any others...
just cos its been 20years since it was released...???

Hey Scobs, I work in the industry as you may or may not know.

ET is a classic & there is a whole generation of kids out there that havent seen it. So theres money to be made! Beauty & the Beast has been re-done with an extra scene too and opens on 1 January - only its on IMAX so that makes it extra special. Thats just the way it is, some things will never change.....

ET isnt mine, but I will definately go see it.

If you want to see something a bit different my recommendation to you for January are:

-K PAX (Kevin Spacey) - opens 3 Jan

-Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back - opens 31 Jan

PS: We arent getting low on movies either, the company that I work for released about 25 titles in 2001 - but Ive got 65 in 2002.....

pluto -i like the cut of your jib! seeing classics on the big screen is possibly one of the more enjoyable things in life, if marketing have to throw in some bollocks about digital remastering to sell it to the kids then so be it, but i can't wait to see et again....

jon b - Keep an eye out for Apocalypse Now Redux - no date yet, but it will be amazing.

Pluto - i haev been onto at leat 3 threads where you have mentioned that you work "in the industry" whats the deal with that? i understand that it is something you can be proud of if ya wanna be, but my 16 yr old cousin works in a movie theatre and gets to see all the movies too, but he doesnt brag about it!

Caz - mmmmm, and L8N is a good mate of mine and I dont go on about what clubs/bars he is playing at every week do I?

Well considering the shit that Hollywood has been pumping out over the past few years. I would like to see some old movies re-released.
I am so sick of a stock standard action flick with the same plot in a different setting

Go get some old classic flicks out on video and check them out. Hollywood has not been doing its best work over the past ten years or so

scooby - its not that they have run out of ideas, its a revenue earning excercise, much cheaper to re-release a film than to make a new one.

Many things can be misconstrued on here if not accompanied by the right emoticons.....

yeah some movies will never get old, i mean the fairy tales have been around for god knows how long and kids of today and tomorrow deserve the chance to see them......but get used to it cos by the time you die who knows how many more movies they will re-make, or change slightly to suit the generation, don't want to see it?? then dont, it's your money...

Hollywood ran out of Ideas...LOL.....There are always new ideas out there. There are only so many story lines you can throw ar people for them to understand. Take a look at Memento for example a great film. An Old story, a new way of viewing it and still people get lost.
Take a look at American Beauty...Whats original about that Movie, the story and concept have been around in the film industry forever. It was a hundred other unique elements that made the movie.
Apocalypse now.....DAMN..Looking forward to that.

JohnnyB - Ahhh, I LOVE YOU! Memento was mine, American Beauty was mine too - (UIP now have apocalypse tho).

Memento was amazing, I had to watch it about 4 times before I was happy with my theorys on exactly what happened, but what a fantastic piece of work....

Yeah I was really impressed with Guy...He's done really well since ' Neighbours '.

Scoob - I like it when they re-release old classics because as ren says, its nice to see them on the big screen. I'd kill to see Das Boot on the big screen.

However, I tend to think that the re-release of E.T. is a vanity project/marketing excercise in that "Best of" album vein. Hell, the voiceover says as much.
