ive a toyota leven, and since tuesday it sounds like a marble is loose, and ive figured it for the water pump, bad timing cos my partner away so ive got to do his business and my normal job, so ive been VERY gentle and driving as minimally as possible, so this morning, with much dread, i clean the car out and prepare myself to take it to mechanics, unfortunatly i didnt even make it out my st before i had an ominous shredded belt like sound.
i stopped (immediately) and got it towed (home was closest) but i can clearly see the belt is shredded (not actually BROKEN) just shredded on one side but..... what belt is it? i always thought the cam belt was enclosed in liek the engine bit, this belt is to the left and i Think connected to the water pump (which would make huge amounts of sense seeing as i thought was the water pump anyway) but can anyone advise how many belts are in a normal engine!?

Hmm you have got fan belt & cam belt

if you car has munted either of those, stop driving it, it will end up costing you more $$$$ than a tow truck to the garage.

If the cam belt goes you can f**k the head and the tops of all the pistons

If the fan belt goes you can over heat and seize the whole motor.

good luck

Actually its quite possible you have electric fans..

and the Cam belt will generally be stuffed in the engine not exposed.

It could be the
Water Pump, Power Steering, Air Con, sometimes even the Alternator runs on a belt.

More likely one of the first three Smile`

Not sure about a levin, are the 4AGE engines? hmmm..

if the belt is on the outside, it is either your water pump atlernator belt or you power steering belt, you will have to look at the cause of the shredding, loose stone flicked up or a bearing has shat itself. if you are in auckland play around with cars, especially the ols american stuff.

sounds like a fan belt to me. Levins have 16 valve 4AGE Smile ohhhhh i love levins!

clever people! it was the power steering belt, and thank god wasnt a major, a bloody bolt just "fell" out.. (i did go over some curbs lately) but cos the belt was holding the power steering pump without bolts, the tension was funny, hence the belt shredding, so now all fixed and im happy Very Happy

ps, im selling my car now anyway ... err except for that little hiccup its a fantastic mechanical car and only a couple of supermarket dents.. and very loud sounds if anyone is interested
