Is it as defined by FHM, Cleo, Cosmo, TV?
Is it Nicole Kidman, Anna Kournikova, Brad Pitt,
Tom Cruise?
Is it inside, outside?
Is it you or me?

the truth is, it's all these things and more than
these things - so much more.

We are so bombarded by society with images of
"perfect people". We've become obsessed with
the face value of a person... and this is reflected
often on Biggie.

Let's face it - the version of beauty discussed
here is far too often the FHM/Cosmo version -
an image created by men and salespeople for
the express purpose of making us feel we need
to spend money to make us beautiful. It's
creating a society of people who believe that -
without the trappings deemed neccessary by
cosmetic companies and clothing designers, -
we are little plain things who will be 'left on the
shelf'.

Fair enough, it is a fact of life, and there's not a
lot I can do to change that (not this week
anyway)... the thing that gets me though, is the
obsession with preening, the endless veiled
fishing for compliments that goes on.

Come on people - we are all beautiful. We
KNOW we're all beautiful - all this talk about the
perfect body becomes tedious. Not only that
(and this is the only time I am going to admit
this) but it kind of makes me feel like I'm not
doing a good enough job as a woman - I don't
wear a lot of make-up. I don't paint my nails. I
don't buy expensive clothes or shoes. I don't
smell though :0)... that's a point in my favour!
Does this make me less beautiful than anyone
else?

I am who I am. I look like what I look like. That's
all it should be.

SpeedE - that was the biggest load of cheesy bollocks I have ever seen. *laughs*

That's the kind of shit Cosmo etc play lip service too, actually. Smile
[quote]
the difference being Cosmo then go on to tell
you how to improve yourself in order to catch a
man, and make him marry you Razz
[quote]
SpeedE that's the best thing I heard today Smile

Voice Smile I guess you can't speak your the one with the nurse fetish Smile

Lollie: Agreed. Those magazines are the bigest laod of hypocritical bullshit, but incidentally, probably quite aligned to a lot of the female population, who care quite deeply about how they look (and that's fine), but will then tell others how important it is to "love yourself, as that's all that matters".

Trying not to stereotype here but I have met many females of this ilk. Including my ex. btw - I'm not saying whether it's good or bad right now. Smile Both elements are good, in moderation. Very Happy

I still think that was cheesy bollocks. Smile

There's nothing wrong with looking good, looking after one self, and feeling good!!!

I def would rather be a healthy, average looking person, than a fat, ugly looking person!!!

But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I'm glad that I've married a Farkin Spunk!!!!!

The thing is though, and I know this is a BIG cliche, but there IS LOTS of pressure on girls to looks a certain way. I feel it every day. I have ever since I was little, my whole family are obsessed with looks. All the guys I have ever hung around with always harp on about good looking chicks and my girl friends ar always comparing themselves to each other. So is it any wonder that people (ok me) worry about their looks? The breast implant thread was a bit of fun - most of it wasn't serious but I was serious when I said that I thought plastic surgery was a good idea for those people who really want it. Who are you hurtng by having it done? No one!! No matter what, people will always judge you on your looks because that is the very first thing that is presented to them when they first meet you. So sue me for wanting to make a good impression. However, when I buy clothes, makeup, jewellery, nail polish etc I buy it because it makes me feel good, I certainly don't do it for anyone else.

Don't mind me. I'm just a militant feminist. I do feel sorry for my poor boyfriend though... :0)
