Aussie has 23% of the population born outside their shores. My closest friends here are several kiwis and an aussie or two. Most of the people I spend time with are Kiwis, aussies, and the odd Pom and yank.
But I know people that spend their time only with Kiwis. Or never with kiwis. and so on.
I think most of us will have a small support network of fellow kiwis that were friends or friends of friends, from before we arrived? Whats it like for you?
I always said that when I came to London I'd try and make friends with British people. It just didnt end up happening like that. I live with Kiwi's, work with Americans and basically all the pubs/bars/clubs I got to are mainly kiwi/aussie/saffa. Actually I dont think I've met 1 British person in my suburb!
I think going out and meeting the locals is the best thing. Fair enough to have kiwi mates and all, but I find the other cultures refreshing (yes, even aussie.)
I noticed today at work that some kiwis I met were all friendly "where you from" etc, while others were "you're a kiwi - cool" and it was no issue. Just interesting how some look to find familiarity in their countrymen, while others don't care.
