What do I say to my smelly flatmate?

Need your advice biggies.

New flatmate moved in on Sunday. Lovely girl, get on like a house on fire. She waxed poetic about how clean and tidy she is when we interviewed her. BUT... upon her moving in, we discovered that she brought with her this god awful smell. Whenever she opens her bedroom door it wafts out. And it follows her around the house. Figured out last night - it's her FEET.

She walks and busses everywhere, doesn't have a car, so I guess that explains the sweaty feet. But OH HOLY NOSTRILS it is foul.

I want to be a grown up and address it with her heh but it's kinda a tricky thing when our relationship is so new. It's so bad I don't want people coming over to the house, and the Glade plug-in shit that I put in the hall outside her room doesn't disguise the smell. I'm having to resort to attacking her room with febreeze when she's not there.

I'm useless with this confrontational stuff. What should I say?

Shit no it smells too bad. I just lean in the open door and spray with my eyes closed and my nose pinched.

Leaving foot stuff outside her door seems like it would make things akward. Not that talking to her wouldn't be but...

If it was me, i'd just say "dude, your feet really smell".

There's only one way, which is to address the problem directly. Make it clear what the problem is and make certain that she gets the message something needs to be done about it, but also be sure to give her plenty of reassurance that otherwise everything is good and you are happy to have her in the house.

This is pretty much exactly what I would do/say.

"Hey ___ .. can we just have a quick chat about something personal if you've got a few minutes.. I really don't want to offend you or make you uncomfortable or embarrased but I've just noticed since you moved in that maybe a few of your shoes are a bit old or need the insole changed as the smell is quite bad.. I know this is awkward to bring up and talk about as we've just kinda started getting to know each other.. but I thought it would be best to bring it up now as I think you're a great flattie and I enjoy your company so I don't want something like this to make things uncomfortable between us and I'd hope if something that I have done or anything has bothered you that you would bring it up now.. So how do you think we could sort this out, would you mind getting rid of any old shoes or perhaps leaving your shoes outside?"

That's what I'd do pretty much a hundy percent.

Though I'd be charming and lovely so she would be like aww I feel bad lets chuck out all my shoes and get me a foot spa and super good foot products.

when she walks in, just have them be direct and say 'wow, is that your feet. that shit smells girl'
then you use the chance to chime in with 'shit good spotting, I have been trying to track that smell down for days now, it was infecting the house! wash your jams gurl!!!'

it's usually a wears shoes with no socks problem imo. Which plenty of girls do if they wear pretty girly shoes.

only saw her last night (since I posted the OP) and she was quite odour-free so I'm waiting to see if it has gone away or if it was a temporary reprieve. Either way, we're getting new carpet in a few weeks so I'm going to set out firm no shoes/clean feet rules, which should help
