My laptop is pretty much toasted so will be buying a new one shortly.

Any brands that are recommended, and any that I should stay away from?

I had an HP last time, and it tended to overheat like a mofo so am kinda keen on trying sommin new.

Before that I had a Dell, but flagged them cos they were soo fuckin ugly... but there latest lot are pretty hot looking.

So yeah, looks, value for money, performance... whats teh good ones? Not really keen on a Mac.

I haven't really thought about price range, but under 2 grand, maybe around $1500 yeah.

most sane people here are going to tell you HP/Dell/Lenovo.

looks are something for fags and girls.

heatwise, steer clear of AMD powered machines and stick to Intel. course everything runs pretty warm these days.

DON'T buy Acer or NEC. others here like ASUS, not me.

lookswise, HP and Sony are the leaders really in the PC world. if you're going to pay Sony dollars however, you might as well get a Mac.

Actually kris...

Centrino 2's just hit:

Sony Vaio VGNFW15GB Notebook
http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/en/product/XC4881

Bought one for someone a couple of days ago... but if you're not up to that:

HP Pavilion dv6822TX 'Thrive' Notebook
http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/en/product/XC4817

Cam your overheating thing is true of any laptop of its era and not something to discount HP on.

I had 2 VAIOs before and I loved it

but after reading this news I'm not so sure...

www.bbc.co.uk said:
Sony is recalling 440,000 Vaio laptop computers worldwide because of wiring faults that could cause overheating.

The recall concerns 19 Vaio models in the TZ series manufactured between May 2007 and July 2008 - but does not include models sold in the UK.

Sony said wires have been put in the wrong position near the hinge, while a flaw in the circuit board that controls the screen also may cause overheating.

The company said that a number of people had been burnt by the fault.

According to the company 373,000 of the Vaio laptops were sold worldwide in some 48 countries, with 67,000 sold in Japan.

Minor burns

Sony said that anyone who believed their machine was part of the recall should contact the firm to organise an inspection and rework of the wiring where needed.

And a Sony UK spokesperson said there had "been no reported incidents of this potential issue in products sold in the UK to date, and a product recall is not required".

Sony has received 209 reports of overheating worldwide, including seven incidents where people received minor burns, Associated Press reported.

In 2006, major laptop manufacturers including Dell, Hitachi, Apple, Lenovo and Toshiba were among those who recalled a total of 9.6 million Sony batteries after evidence that, in certain circumstances, the batteries could overheat and catch fire.

aight so I wnet to check these out... and I couldnt get past the hideous brown colour... there aint any in black...

but which is best outta theses 2?

PAVILION DV5-1005AX

http://www.c1com.co.nz/shop/step1.php?number=15162

(with $100 cash back)

HP Pavilion dv6823TX Notebook

http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/48c5c36d05a71edc273fc0a87f3b0725/Product/View/XC4818

HP product numbers seem all over the show... unless the 6823 is an older model...
But, yeah, the DV5 seems like the same thing but cheaper??

They also both have Blu ray drives yeah... so am I right in assuming I can plug these laptops into my 32 inch LCD via the HDMI ports and watch bluray HD quality Discs on my television?

...Andrew?

anyone?

Thanks.

i would go for the second one since it has a much better processor. intel shits all over AMD in this area.

When I was looking for a new laptop, a lot of computer people told me to go with Toshiba, I did, and it has been really good Smile
[quote]
tosh are great, but rarely price competitive, although that is changing these days.

online support can be confusing for them however, a lot of their models are localised for AU and NZ and it can be hard to find support for your specific model clearly. they have shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit websites.
[quote]
put it this way, we've switched our work leases from toshiba to HP, although obviously we get business models not consumer.

Toshiba is good, I don't have any problems with them. My prefered laptop right now is HP, its reliable, good pricing and driver support is excellent.

I would go for the 2nd option cam Smile like kb said, Intel shits all over AMD in this area!

thanks all...

Its kinda annoying really the dv6823TX is a dicontinued model and is $1900 at Dick Smith...

and it seems that the DV5-1005AX is pretty much its replacement model, as it has similar specs (slightly better perhaps), but it just doesnt have the intel processor... and i can get it for $1720.

... so its $200 bucks more for an older model... with the right processor... stupid HP!!
[quote]
Also, anyone know if I'm right on this?:

older model doesn't really mean that much, and it will actually be faster.

and yeah should be fine to connect up to TV ad far as i know.

Dell is evil piece of crap. You can better buy an Acer and at least get some warranty compared to nothing at all with Dell. Normally, I would go for a HP.

Dell opinion mainly based on the crap warranty service on client dell computers and the credit check they when I wanted to buy one. While I didn't want use any pay plans or credit cards.

Currently, I have my second Apple notebook yet to determine if I will go for the next. Depends on the outcome of my battle against Apple Ireland and my warranty issue.

I've had my laptop for about 5 years now. And it's a AMD. I never had one issue with it. Runs like a tank.

This is what I'm thinking of upgrading to:

*drools*

They're fucking good looking laptops too. I've had feel/grab/looksie when at Noel Leeming this weekend. Cool
[quote]
Toshiba is pretty good and gets alot of reccomendations by ppl. Havent had much experiences on others. The Sony ones always looked really cool, but they seem overpriced. The new Dell ones dont look so bad now.

When i was at an IT expo in Singapore recently, there was this other brand called MSI...they've got a portable laptop called MSI Wind, which got really good reviews in the papers over there, compared to other portable laptops. Their stall was very crowded.
[quote]
Just incase this comes up again:
NZ sales of Comp brands rank like this: (roughly)
Compaq
HP
Toshiba
Acer
Apple
Asus
Sony
NEC

Worldwide is a huge different kettle of fish. More like:
HP
Acer
Toshiba
Apple
NEC
Asus
Compaq
Sony

If you look up details of computers you will see there are 4 major factorys in asia that build models for all of the major brands.
What does this mean to you?
Not too much apart from the fact that the HP laptop you buy is from the same factory using the same parts as that Acer next to it, or the Toshiba beside that.
The room for difference is:
Build Spec
Quality control
Software preloaded
Ports

I guess what im trying to say is yes some brands have better reputations through years of good publicity and use but that doesnt mean the others are no good.
Your XXXXX brand computer is just as likely to run well for its entire life and cause you no issue.
[quote]
Would it be fair to say that the laptops are made to spec rather than from all the same parts?

RAM is also all made in the same (few) factories but not all of them are created equally.

I've given up having that argument bob Wink

Yes agree they are made to spec.
What im saying is that is all you have to go on really.
If you had two identical spec'd laptops but one was HP & the other was Toshiba whats the difference? Basically nothing.
Difference in specs and is all manufacturers have to go on.
[quote]
Are you suggesting the hardware and assembly of said hardware is identical?

Madden 09 and Fifa 09 are produced by the same company on the same DVDs, clearly they're IDENTICAL!

Something a LITTLE weird though the other day, some cunt in Madden picked up the ball and RAN with it! I was sitting there with my mate screaming HAND BALL! But nobody listened Crying or Very sad

Yes its assembled by the same pair of hands most likely.

Andrew: STFU Froggy I was quite clear that software was different.

To summarise: the fact they're assembled in the same factory is meaningless.
