He was a medic in the Navy. One of those guys who was never happy with any situation, and would complain about pretty much everything that ever happened to anything. Makes an excellent fundamentalist.

Back to Ireland Ken Mair you fool!

Argh, this guy pisses me off so much.

Who the fuck cares about one letter? SERIOUSLY.

Names are powerful things. Personally, I think Ken Mair and Michael Laws are both complete fuckwits who richly deserve each other, but in this case I want to the "H" go in just so I can see that racist prick Laws humiliated in his own patch.

Can you imagine the cost of re-doing every sign in the town and around the surrounding area, just to keep a couple of people happy? They already got the river, do they really need to continue this pathetic fight?

ssly. so glad i dont live down there anymore.
[quote]
Well, I would imagine it would be phased in as signs and things needed replacing...

Really though its a fight more of Law's making than anyone else. He is deliberately using the name as an opportunity to try and deliver a racist snub to local Maori. Anyone who has been to Wangers knows that the place is a fully Maori place, like Gisborne, so Law's actiuon is calculated to be little more than an insult.

If there was some goodwill it seems to me the amswer is to adopt both spellings - after all, we have the precedent of Aoraki/Mt. Cook - and see which survives.
[quote]
And since I got an email today asking if someone was "Aloud to dig" somewhere I doubt most people could cope with having to add an extra "H".
[quote]
If the spelling was changed would that mean the pronouncation should be changed also?
[quote]
it will set a nasty precedent.

I expect to see Haitaitai renamed to its proper form.

Whaitaitai.

The thing is how would Mayor Laws like it if everyone started spelling his name Micael Laws??

Spellage Cops, sorry. But It is Hataitai, I think? Ha, not Hai. Possibly.
So Whataitai, if it's missing a W.
I guess.

Wanganui isn't maori! its fully white. believe me, i lived there. barely any maori anything there. its pure low/middle class white nz.
[quote]
I think they should change a few names then...

Wellington to Whellington
Wellsford to Whellsford
Hamilton to Waiwhakamukau

etc

Michael Laws replies after nocturnal visitation

quote:
This much is known that Wanganui was sometimes spelt as "Whanganui". Although much more often, the reverse. And so like Otago (derived from the Maori "Otakou"Wink, the province assumed an identity of its own. Independent of Maori and yet a part. The true description would be "a name derived from the Maori language".

It is now the contention of Wanganui people that our city and district has its own identity, its own history, its own pride, its own mana. We asserted such in 2006, when 17,000 people voted in a plebiscite on our district's name. Almost 14,000 of that number (82%) voted to keep Wanganui's spelling as it is.

WTF? Maybe you were living in some kind of gated community and wore blinkers Laughing

My Auntie Tudy would certainly disagree with you :p
While there might be a majority of "white" (as you call it) living in the town centre, how does this mean that the local tribes have NO say?

In any case, I can remember locals from both sides of the river, saying that no one really knew where Ken Mair came from and how no one wanted to claim him as theirs. Funny that he is still around speaking with some right to authority.
