i've had ADSL for about 3 weeks now. i have a router which shares the connection between a few computers. it has little blinking lights on it, the two more interesting ones indicate ethernet and adsl activity.

during normal operation, both lights blinks as data comes in and out onto the lan on it's way to a computer. cool.

however, twice the ADSL light has just started blinking like mad with no Ethernet activity at all. this happens even if all the computers are off. it goes on for extended amounts of time, until i disconnect the router, wait a few minutes and then reconnect.

i have a static IP address, so i'm not a moving target so to speak. is some script kiddie trying to hack in? is he chewing up all my bandwidth allocation for the month when doing that??

It could be - more likely to be virus/worm activity tho. The router wont forward any packets on unless you have port forwarding on - it acts as a simple firewall in that sense so you shouldnt have anything to worry about.

If youve set up port forwarding then make sure that computer is up to date and virus protected / firewalled.

and it will be using up bandwidth but unless someone is dossing you it wont be anything significant.

not much you can do about it either.

yep i'm forwarding a couple of ports to one of the computers, so that certain network games can function. however it's only a few ports and none of them are used by RPC (ala Blaster) or any other services so i'm not too concerned.

thanks bob
