WE-HQ Development - Christchurch's Youth Hub

In 2007 White Elephant ran a youth conference in response to the Edgeware Rd tragedy which claimed the lives of two of our members. One of the calls to action was to create an inner-city venue for youth which WE has been planning for since it moved into L1, 1 Bedford Row in June 2007. As a result, WE-HQ is now set to be redeveloped and become a central hub and functional resource for the youth of Christchurch!

The space will be developed to include the following functional rooms:

- DJ practice booths
- Production studio
- Band practice room and recording booth
- Work room
- Meeting rooms
- Media creation room
- Reception area
- Chill out lounge area

Stage 1 of the developments being the development of the core fitout of the space, is budgeted at $160,000. White Elephant is now calling upon the community and local businesses to get in and support the concept. We are looking for three basic things:

- Donations and sponsorships in the form of cash
- Donations and sponsorships in the form of materials and capital items
- Volunteer time to assist with the demolition and building stages

Any contribution, no matter how big or small, is greatly appreciated.

That floorplan shows the 'production' room as being close to perfectly square. If you have the option you may want to consider changing dimensions to give you better acoustics.

Yup shows how much of a n00b I am when it comes to studio setup and resonances!

We conctracted a guy to help with the studio design, he took the shell of our plans and worked out the "ideal" dimensions (WxLxH) for both the recording and production booths, which I've taken to the architects to get drawn up. And obviously I haven't updated the Floorplan.

Should be quite good though, being able to provide a band practice room/recording studio as a resource to the community. Also the production studio will be setup for electronic music production and we'll be running basic courses on "Introduction to Music Production" for those who want to get into it but wouldn't have a clue!

The DJ booths will be available for hire and we'll be running a 10-week course for anyone wanting to learn the basics of DJing. If anyone's keen to help out and offer lessons/mentoring to emerging DJs, drop me an email with some details of your experience etc. antz@we.org.nz
