Old news...
========================================

The Mashup Mafia are proud to announce the first tier acts for the "Wall of Sound Project", hitting Auckland on the 1st of August 2008. A concept which started as some live elements thrown ontop of great music that has now exploded into a large scale production featuring all of the best genres, coupled with a thunderous sound system and equally entertaining visual experience at one of Auckland's greatest new venues.

LIVE: The Exiles (http://www.myspace.com/textiles)

Seemingly they came from nowhere and made quite the first impression, with their first single ‘The One’ becoming the first independently released New Zealand track to reach the Top 30 on radio play and digital sales alone. However there’s a musical pedigree here that goes a long way to explaining that out of the box success. The pedigree stems from the nucleus of The Exiles - two sublimely talented people in Sean Sturm and Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper. Joining Mahuia and Sean on-stage is Graeme Cope, an amazingly talented drummer who’s also worked with Che Fu & The Krates; Jessica Hindin on keyboards and Harry Champion on bass. Their recent Big Day Out appearance caught the attention of The Herald which judged them the band with “Best Attitude” jointly with Electric Confectionaires and Rip It Up magazine which liked them enough to suggest “If you’ve never seen them, go and check them out…a catchy rock set”. Check them out for yourself below..

The Exiles "Circles"
The Exiles "Hear The People"

LIVE: The Misfits of Science (http://www.misfits-of-science.com)

Their Fools Love video and single – which was one of New Zealand's most popular releases in 2004 – sold nearly double platinum. They followed that with gold sales of their debut album, MOS Presents.... This time round they're wanting you to know that they're not content to be contained within the restrictive confines of hip hop.

"The music we make, the way we look, act and sound, challenges the average listener. Our attention to detail is more pedantic than most. The fact that we know what we like and don't like, only give credit where we feel it's justifiably due, and aren't afraid to voice our opinions, defines us."

Their new material is still iconoclastic and irreverent but there's a focus on intelligent musicality this time- the tracks contain everything from an interpolation of a Bach fugue to woodwind orchestrations in a Nelson Riddle vein. This makes for an exotic but very palatable combination- kind of like a fancy European sausage that once you've tried you just have to have for your next home cooked pizza.

And who are Misfits of Science? The musically adventurous duo of Steve-E and Soul Jones are obsessive about detail, passionate, fastidiously quality conscious, unclassifiable and unashamedly hooked on E-bay. They're two smarter than average guys who care about music too much to be doing too much of anything else (apart from shopping on E-bay for shoes and clothes of course).

"Our subject matter isn't about love or hard-life stories. We're interested in sex, buying clothes on E-bay and stuff that happens in everyday life, and we write our songs about that."

Misfits of Science - "Can't Leave You Alone"
Misfits of Science - "Mama I'm a Misfit"
Misfits of Science - "Fools Love"

DJ/LIVE: The Mashup Mafia (http://www.themashupmafia.com)

Not content listening to any one particular style for longer than 20 minutes, this Auckland based cosca began as two DJ's (Popcod & The Aphid) trying to bend the conventional rules of the one set one genre mentality. Totally incapable of sticking to just one style, and with a fierce desire to mashup some of the greatest dancefloor fillers with some of the phattest underground vibes - the Mashup Mafia set out to defy the conventional rules and write their own while they were at it. Originally consisting of just two breakbeat djs, the Mafia have recently expanded their performance to include The Aphid (Dubstep/Breaks/Hiphop/Rock), Popcod (Liquid Drum & Bass/Hiphop/Funk), Static (Full Spectrum Party Style Drum & Bass), Mike Wilson on Vocals and MikeE on visuals creating an explosive multi-genre audio-visual live experience like no other!

Stay tuned for more top acts including Auckland's top Drum and Bass & Dubstep DJs and producers...

Second release announced!! (One more to go!)

DJ: The Bushkrakers (http://www.myspace.com/djrandomplaynz)

Comprising two chicken wing and monkey noise/screech enthusiasts, The Bushkrakers collective involves two Auckland DJ's who met at a house party in their early days of music discovery. With a love of old school hip hop and a wide range of electronica, DJ Randomplay and Komotion's sets are usually comprised of what some music wankers call a 'journey'. We prefer to call it phat party that gets faster and faster. Starting off with Hip Hop, (lots of instrumentals and acapellas) their sets usually follow with Midtempo funk, funky breaks, dirty 4x4 and liquid drum and bass. They work with 3 turntables, 3 cdj's, and two mixers, with a whole lot of scratching thrown in. Listen out for wack samples, hilarity and good times!

DJ: Jess & Emma (http://www.georgefm.co.nz/show39.html)

Auckland's liquid drum and bass scene has seen so much growth in the last few years and part of that is thanks to these two leading ladies of liquid. They both host a weekly show on George FM every Saturday at 7PM, showcasing some of the latest tunes whilst keeping people up to play with what's coming up in Auckland. If not known for their radio show Jess & Emma are certainly known for "Liquid Recreation", which is Auckland's longest running always-themed ultra-fun liquid drum and bass party run in conjunction with Subtronix. If you haven't had the opportunity to catch these girls in action - now is your chance!

DJ / Producers: Flirt With Dirt (http://www.myspace.com/flirtwithdirt)

Whether producing fresh tracks in the studio or mixing tasty beats in the club, this duo con brio always provides a refreshingly musical take on drum and bass. The unique guy/girl combination of DJ/Producers Teddy Edit and Vinci have been making waves on the drum and bass scene both locally and internationally with their vibrant productions and eclectic DJ sets. The first half of 2008 sees Flirt with Dirt's first international release 'Mind Pacific' hitting the digital music shelves courtesy of Australian liquid drum and bass label Golden Orb Recordings. With more releases in the pipeline they are set to help put New Zealand liquid drum and base on the global stage.

Throughout their flourishing production career their tunes have made it into the hands, and crates of some of drum and bass' most revered Djs, from dnb innovator LTJ Bukem cutting exclusive Flirt with Dirt dubplates to play in his sets, to music aficionado DJ Patife ranking 'Mind Pacific' on his website's top ten list and including their luscious tune 'Zanzibar' on his exotically inspired mix for the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy Radio. Their DJ sets stimulate and excite any dancefloor as they swing the liquid drum and bass vibe from party-rocking tunes that will get you amping to deep soulful rollers that take you to reverie. So get moving to the new sound of New Zealand liquid drum n bass!

DJ: Phixx (http://www.myspace.com/phixx_nz)

Known for his rolling sets blending deep, soulful, and liquid sounds, Phixx (aka Duncan Blair) has emerged as a regular feature in the Auckland drum and bass scene over the past 12 months. In as many months he has supported international artists such as Redeyes (Akl & Wel), LAOS (Akl), Alix Perez (Akl) and Lynx (Akl) and has performed at New Zealand's largest drum and bass event Phat 08 NYE! He is also one of the founding residents of liquid funk weekly "Low Rollers", a two-time Rumble in the Jungle regional finalist, and is fast becoming the popular choice for deep funk injected liquid drum and bass sets.

DJ: Jacey (http://www.myspace.com/djjacey)

Jacey (aka Jason Cook) has fast risen through the ranks of the local scene to secure his place as one of the most up for it party drum and bass djs out there. For Jacey it all started with illegal house parties and all ages raves where he honed his skills & formed his own style leading him on a journey to eventually play support for Evol Intent & Concord Dawn, two of his idols! More recently he has entered & won the Roll TV drum and bass competition, and is also the man behind the fully featured multi-genre concept "For The Music". Musically Jacey's positive and always up for it attitude ensures a set composed of tight mixing, quality tunes, and vibe certain tear the floor to pieces!

Plus MUCH more to be announced very soon!!!!!!

DJ : Solkai & Lobo (http://www.myspace.com/mark_naturalselectionz & http://www.myspace.com/marlonlobo)

Emerging on to the scene when the Ministry was the club that now houses Zen and Fu Bar, Solkai & Lobo were known to appreciate the deep musical style of drum and bass and downbeat. They were behind the mid afternoon Saturday NaturalselectioNZ sessions at Rakinos and were often found spinning at club nights such as Low Key Movements and Split or even trekking down to play at Dunedin's Bath St. When he’s not spinning at regular nights such as Liquid Recreation and Low Rollers, Lobo can be heard playing bass for the Psychadelic Afro Soul band The Hot Grits. He has also played support for some of his favourite dnb acts including LTJ Bukem, Calibre, Marcus Intalex, Marky and Redeyes and also made the bill for Fu Bar's old monthly Glide nights. Solkai’s range of music spans from downbeat to house to drum and bass. Basically “Musical Music” is how he describes it. He has supported DJs such as Big Bud, Redeyes, and L.A.O.S and just recently played a smashing set at Kinetic. Now joining forces b2b again, they will take the Wall of Sound Project through a historical journey of their favourite tunes from the past 10 years - an experience, not to be missed any heads!

DJ + MC : Absolute Value & Smooth Commentator MC (http://www.myspace.com/theabsolutevalue)

Originally from the beautiful Pacific Northwest, Absolute Value and Smooth Commentator have relocated to the amazing shores of New Zealand where they have been tearing up dancefloors with their exciting liquid funk sets. Absolute Value is no stranger to the NZ liquid drum and bass scene and has a long history of playing at some of NZ's best parties including Deep Hard n Funky, Groove in the Park, Low Rollers, Liquid Recreation and Roll. Recently Absolute Value has also played alongside acts such as the Roll Crew, Antiform, Jess & Emma and most notably international acts such as Redeyes & L.A.O.S. The duo have worked together on musical projects for years, but decided to team up in early 2004 to create a very entertaining, original drum and bass show. Four years later, and thousands of kilometers away from where it all first started, you can bet with Absolute Value's tight 9 years of experience behind the decks, and Smooth Commentator’s fresh freestyles you're guaranteed a night of big tunes, and quality entertainment!

DJ : Orawan (http://www.myspace.com/djorawan)

Born in Thailand but now based in Auckland, Orawan's full-spectrum drum and bass sets are always pumping whether in support of an international artist, or performing at her popular bi-monthly club night Kinetic. Having graduated from Mainz Music and Audio Engineering School in 2006, her extensive musical knowledge and passion for music is reflected in her performance. She features various parties around Auckland including Low Rollers, Fusion Soul, DNBBQ, and has supported international talent such as LTJ Bukem and Big Bud. It is easy to conclude that Orawan is one DJ behind the decks who knows how to keep a crowd dancing, so she is definitely one act you do not want to miss!

DJ : Jason George (http://www.myspace.com/jasongeorge)

Although Jason's history is spread across multiple genres, continents, clubs and raves, he is still one of the few that can lay down a slamming set of beats from any of his chosen genres, any given time, or place. In 2000 he moved into garage, 2 step and breaks, from a love of tribal house in the late 90's - but his interest in broken drum patterns soon grew and he has been integrating dubstep into his sets since 2003. During the recent growth of dubstep in Auckland, Jason's existing catalogue hasn't gone unnoticed and his drive for the phatest beats and deepest basslines will have the dancefloor shuffling for more, while they're dished sound pressure servings one dubplate after the other!

DJ / Producer : Upseta (http://www.myspace.com/upseta)

Upseta (Chel Santamaria) first got into drum and bass after experiencing Dillinja and Lemon D on their "Big Bad Bass" tour of New Zealand in 2002. One year later he had built a studio and jumped straight into producing beats! As he was completely inspired by the huge rib cage rattling bass pressure Dillinja had become famous for, his style of production soon followed similar patterns and he began to produce low frequency reaching tunes one after the other over the years. Known for his love of vinyl and the warm sound associated with real dubs, Upseta is infamous for getting his hertz churning tunes cut direct to dub plate costing him thousands - for gigs he may only be paid hundreds for! He does it for the love of the music and so the Wall of Sound Project is giving him the perfect opportunity to showcase his latest 20 dubplates, ensuring anyone in attendance will have a genuinely chest pounding experience like never before!

DJ : Future One (http://www.myspace.com/mark_future_one)

Hardware head, analogue enthusiast, ladies man and one of Auckland's first producers to push the Dubstep sound, Future One blazes a quality studio tan and is always served fully loaded with original productions, exclusive dubs and plenty of Tiger. As a Fu & Base FM DJ, he regularly features local gigs including Liquid Recreation, In Depth, Outsource and Wheel as well as supporting International acts such as Pendulum and N Type. Focusing on a forward thinking sound and big bass lines he'll be stepping up to the Wall of Sound rig with a multi genre set covering downbeat, dub, dubstep, reggae, dancehall, midtempo funk, hip hop and electro bass!

LIVE: Andy Qroniq (http://www.myspace.com/andyqroniq)

With over ten years of crowd rocking experience and a knack for creating mayhem onstage with NZ's favourite ska/rock band The WBC, Andy Qroniq has fast developed a reputation as the pied-piper of jungle techno. Mainly attributed to throwing down his soulful saxophone licks as the icing on the musical cake at parties such as Low Rollers, Lead the Way and InDepth he has also performed alongside Solkai, Lobo, Format, The Mashup Mafia and more notably, Redeyes during his tour of NZ. When Andy isn't decorating cakes with saxolicks, he has been pursuing a new found love for Dubstep, so if we're lucky, perhaps when he's finished piping on his Saxophone he may crack open the record case and drop a few!

LIVE BEATBOXING: Metronome (http://www.myspace.com/metronomeproductionsnz)

Metronome also known as Josh Leys is a human beat-boxer, singer and song writing extraordinaire! He has performed alongside artists such as LOW TECH (rapper and beats producer of ROOTS MANUVA), whilst taking to the BIG DAY OUT stage twice with KID SHELLEEN and dropping his precise beats at THE BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY against ROBOT and JUSTIN FX (former NZ Human-Beatbox Champion). When he isn't performing for crowds or MC'ing events Josh is working closely with cutting edge local producer Ralphe Engle and the talented Indira Moala forming Metronome Productions. Josh will take stage to to contain the crowds at the Wall of Sound Project - and is definitely one act you do not want to miss!
