So I'm looking at setting up the internet and phone at my new place and Im thinking a voip based service could be a good option price wise.
I'm looking at having a modem with QoS, to ensure line quality.
At this stage Im looking at Xnet Naked DSL with Kiwi VoIP basic $10 plan.

What can people tell me about VoIP as a phone service?

I had xnet and it was fine. Better actually because it came with a bunch of features that you just don't get with pots.

my fav was I was alerted to all calls and who they were via email, and voice mail to email.

Assuming you're using a hardware VOIP phone, or conventional phone plugged into an VOIP ATA, 99.9% of the time you're not going to notice a thing different. It's not exactly rocket science.

Of course the question to ask is WHY you need a conventional landline. All they do is ring and annoy you.

amen to that brother.

That's why I just get my PA to answer it

I haven't really had a conventional phone line for awhile and it the brief time I did I never really used it anyway.
To me VoIP seems like the way to go (although I know little about it) - I was just trying to get a gage on any potential downfalls of this versus the phone line.
Thus far I can't see any issues, some people have mentioned lack of quality serice when internet is being used hence why I was going for the modem which offered QoS to counter this.

So why bother with this VoIP line?

I have Voip. In fact I work for Xnet and use our approved hardware with our Voip. I don't know what Kiwi Voip is like tho. My set up is good, with no issues, just like a "normal" phoneline.

Forgot about this thread. xnet prioitised voice traffic. Plus voice doesn't use much bandwidth anyway (set to 64kbps I think?)

I don't have it anymore simply because I had to move into a flat and someone already was on contract to telescum.
