Technically speaking, i guess its like those ridged paint lines you get on the side of the motorway to wake you up if you are driving off the road asleep but with variation on the distance of hits. Encoding amplitude and frequency must be possible, they managed to encode 4 speaker surround into vinyl records in the 70's, it was short lived though as the rear speaker components were harmonically encoded and wore out very quickly.
