And thats why I haven\'t gone to any of these Velvet parties. Going to such an effort to pretend to be wanky is just sad.

I was hardly going to pretend to be wanky Harvey......just for something different...and nothing wrong with getting 9\'ed up on occaisions now and again....

I knew the music wouldn\'t be my kettle of fish...but cummon...3 rooms with exactly the same vibe.....ie dull....boring....house music.

It almost is enough to make one want to go into promotion and put something on that one likes.

Definite exception to the \'being wanky\' accusation....I could hardly be any different. I just wanted a smaller party than the throngs at the other events....

I\'ll agree there Harvey.....and does it pretty badly I might add.

To me....a big lack in atmos...was ready to rock quite early and listen to my own tunes but friends held us up until 4.00am.

was it different to other Velvets? I really enjoy them and think the atmos and people are great!

Velvet and I\'m really sorry you didn\'t like the

I never dress like a wanky elitest let alone act

I had one of the best NYE so far thanks to the
crowd, House of Downtown, Radley, Greg
Churchill and of course the promoters
when did they say this was going to be lush in

Its just an impression that I have formed from the promotion of Velvet parties in the past that has made me apprehensive about attending one (and the fact that there is so much other stuff on and many clashes).

I would have loved to have added HoD and Greg Churchill to my new years agenda, as they always deliver. But charging between two events already was a bit of a mission, let alone three.

The music wasn\'t me.....absolutely. I do like \"Auckland house\" as I have come to know it....its just that when there is no progression over hours and hours...it gets a little boring. No rooms delved into the darker, dirty seamier side of house that I noted either.

I will state that one of the reasons I thought that Velvet may be alright for me was Greg Churchill\'s prescence... I was really looking forward to hearing him in a smaller intimate venue....I have heard him bang it in the past and was quite looking forward to what his NEW YEARS sound would bring. I was a bit disappointed when I saw he was playing at 7.30am....

I\'m sorry...call me what you want....but I knew I would be long gone before that hour. If I\'d known....maybe I would have looked elsewhere.

So full noise to you DirtyDC...I\'m just expressing an opinion....I took a punt on the music as I thought the promoters may deliver on some other fronts.....I thought the crowd may be magnetically friendly.....I thought the vibe may be different from other events going on.

It didn\'t feel any different from any other night out. My punt did not pay off.

I can understand that. I would love to get you a
comp ticket to the next so you can see for
yourself. That said, Im not trying to make Velvet
sound like the best gig around, if you don\'t like it
you don\'t like it simple. I just prefer that people
have informed opinions.To be honest, I\'ve never
thought much of Nsomnia before Velvet, but
these guys did a great job blackening out the
skylight windows, utilising every room there and
a comparable line-up. It just goes to show that
our opinions change daily. I would never dream
of dissing anyone who went to Slinky although I
don\'t like the music. Its your own state of mind
that makes a night. there are plenty of options in
our fair city now for variety of clubs and music.

I say mix it up...there is no need to go down one street in a set.....Funky, dirty percussive house (check Digweed\'s later GU\'s) is fully acceptable beside the lighter \'fluffier\' side od house. While I\'m not a huge fan of the word \'progressive\'....a set that turns darker or jumps out of its comfort zone is all good for me....

SURPRISES.....deep groovy tunes...that grow by not necessarily lifting BPM\'s...but by...how can I put this.....???? Say hitting a drum in the middle of the skin but slowly getting more edge so a harder metallic sound takes over.....

Twisted.....thats probably what I\'m after. Always keeping the punter on their toes and unsure as what to expect next.

DirtyDC....just after your opinion on this one....but do you think Sax can be overdone during a set. Is the guy playing it told when to jump in by the DJ or does he pretty much jump in when he feels the time is right?

I felt there was a little too much Sax....and it was definately distracting me from the groove that some of the tracks had.

One of the DJ\'s who\'s set I\'ve seen go from dark through to jazzy/bouncey/get the hell outta your chair and dance damnit is derrick carter. This guy mixed so much different music genres in that you started to wonder if it was house music or not

room? actually he was fuckin goood! It can be
well overdone but this guy knew how to play.
To be honest I was really fucked up when I was
on and he came up to announce that he was
going to jam with me. I basically just like to carry
on with what I\'m doing and hope that they can
carry themselves well with the music. Thats
what they are employed to do, all I would do is
alter their levels from time to time.
It all comes back to state of mind where
someone probably hated the guy where others
thought he was fantastic. personally I think less
is more.
I was really happy with my set as far as variety
goes. From twisted to minimal vocal to warm
funky house back to techier choons. It\'s not often
you hear Crazy Penis in the same set as Trevor
Rockliffe

Can\'t say I suffered from any of the complaints \'aint gonna\' had - firstly Trilogy was the champagne - the sponsors product - I had a wicked time playing to an absolutely amped new years crowd who went off for midnight - it was wicked, got heaps of props from soo many people, the vibe was wicked, there is no attitudes there at all.

What the promoters are trying to do is make people make an effort in their own production - like they do with theirs. Nsomnia looked amazing - what a transformation - comfortable and varied environments.

As for music I went all over the place with my set, and walking around afterwards heard, Jaimie stuarts progressive set, Jolly B\'s garage, Marshals techno influenced set, Jason Housin\'s 2step, Steve steers cranked up funky hard edged house, Matti\'s Tribal house, Glenn Marsh\'s niiiice deep tunes, Dirty DC cutting up a storm and in top form as usual, HOD all over the place and Greg Delivering his unmistakeable style - Maybe when you\'re not into house music enough it all sounds the same - I know I can sy that about genres I know little of.

I\'ve heard nothing but good things about Velvet - except when coming to biggie - that\'s where I see the eliteist attitudes coming from.

Its a bit late in the piece but I don't think it makes sense to say that Velvet parties are wanky.

Yes, Velvet has that image. And yes, there are people who go to Velvet events who subscribe to that lifestyle and who will wear Prada, Gucci etc etc but to me, and to a lot of people who go - its all bluff and bluster. No one I know actually takes Velvet (or themselves) that seriously. There are the aforementioned people who do but I don't know them and I don't have to talk to them so they matter to me not a wit.

I spend my time with people I like, not wasting my time complaining about the people I don't. Similarly, I'm not neurotic enough to worry if an event is 'underground' enough for me to go to. The event itself is somewhat irrelevant as long as I'm with people I like, drugs I like and music I enjoy.

That\'s the attitude I got from the non-Velvet going friends in my crew...\'what were the people like, were they up themselves?\' Fuck no! If anything, the people I run chat to at Velvet parties are without a doubt the nicest people I\'ve evr come across at a party. Sure, there are some wankers there, but certainly no more than what I encounter at any other party. In fact way less.

And for every one of the Gucci/Prada wearers, there is someone like me who has turned up to the last few Velvets in boardies and my trust Gumby and Pokey t-shirt. (Eh Ferk!) (NYE excepted. I had dress pants on instead of shorts-Gumby still reprazented!)

Yes, Velvet gets promoted as a \'top-shelf\' party with high dress codes and age restrictions and what not....but it\'s all about having fun at the end of the day. It\'s not often I go to a party where the promoters seem to be having as much fun as the punters!

I\'m getting more and more into house music, \'specially the darker, techier end of the spectrum. What\'s good in Auckland for that kind of stuff?
And secondly - I\'ve always seemed to have had the opinion that bars like Ink, Calibre, Nsomnia, have a, um, slightly less than comfortable dress code. I can rock on into Jones and especially Fu all relaxed-like, but how are the aforementioned bars on things like that?

Its hard to find the middle ground on dress codes with some of these clubs, especially when you appreciate a wide range of music like myself ...who wants to go home and get changed when you want to go to another club

As long as you don\'t look like a complete mess or a candy raver you should be fine.

Hey, I had a great time & thought the people at the `PARTY\" (ie. not `event\') were wicked, the interaction was beautiful & the vibe solid for the entire 14 hours. Well done to all the smiley people - don\'t think I sat down for any more than 2 minuets at a stretch!

So sorry `aint gonna\' - don\'t really understand your complaint, nor how I could constructively `fix\' the problem next time. Havent had any one else complaining you see. Like somebody b4 said, maybe our larger events may be more to your liking, but 1 thing is for sure, we DO have a wicked crowd of supporters, & they aint wankers.

My night at VELVET/NSOMNIA was for me one of the best NYE\'s for several years and I dont remember seeing you there \"Aint Gonna\" cause everyone I saw was most definately smilin and amping with the party vibe. I was too busy partying to hear all the Dj\'s but massive ups to Mata,Darryl Milne,Emerson&Christiaan,Greg Churchill,Karn and Andy Vann. You doods rocked the party. As for the venue I thought it worked wickedly and everybody was raving all good about it and the Velvet production.

Hey Harvey, curious to know what events you where charging between at 6.30 till 10.30am that didnt allow you to see House of Downtown and Greg Churchill???For sure you missed two of the sets of the year and a fully charged atmosphere.

I personally have enjoyed all but one velvet party I\'ve attended (okay this was at the box and I detested that venue - ooo strong words!)

I don\'t feel that Velvet is wanky *or* pretentious - I love the dress code and the R22 - it just means it attracts different people..

Basically I like partying with an older crowd - tho if I tried to explain it this would mean gross generalisations about younger partygoers and there would be trouble for this little chicken...

Velvet tries to be different - a local event as opposed to a packaged overseas touring superclub... (tho I like these as much as the next person too!)

I feel you can\'t judge an event unless you are in attendance and giving it your best effort.

Popped into Velvet @Insomnia and had a wiggle to jolyons\' set - and enjoyed it - it wasn\'t your typical velvet \'event\' tho - nor was it trying to be!
