Anyone got suggestions for a decent Windows RSS reader? Or are people just using things like Google reader these days.

Is there a handy piece of software, you can use to measure your internet usage?

my provider of mobile internet here on prison island is very very vague about giving you easy to use data.

and they charge $100 a gig over your cap.

sweet!

here is another one:

ClipX is a tiny clipboard history manager. It is sweet, it is free, use it.

*disclaimer: I haven't used it myself yet, but am about to install it. Was recommended by Jeff Atwood of Coding Horror fame though.

Old one that you probably know but I still use this a bit as it is comprehensive and I have never bothered to remember the syntax with google convert so I always get it wrong.

But why I really bumped this thread is I have installed switcher again, and discovered it works so much better on win7 that it did in vista (was a bit sluggish if you were used to using exposé on a mac).

Basically gives exposé-like functionality for windows. If you have never used exposé on OSX it's awesome and not having it on windows sometimes leaves me a bit lost when trying to get to things because I'm so used to it.

The real expose is a bit better cos you don't lose drag and drop operations, but it's still handy if you have multiple windows open.

So anyone running a 64 bit system will have noticed unlocker doesn't work.

Have just downloaded this:

Apparently does the same thing.

glad you like it Smile

Here is another one that imitates an OSX feature. I was a bit apprehensive about installing it at first because I'm not trying to OSX my win 7 machine, quite a bit past that sort of carry on, but I was thinking that some sort of docking app or launcher might be handy on the second monitor, and I somehow came across this accidentally (was actually looking for some decent-looking but non-distracting wallpapers so googled mac-like wallpapers and came across sites telling you how to make your UI to look more like a mac. -Buy a fucking mac if that is what you want, don't screw up your windows system).

Anyway... http://rocketdock.com/

Sorta like OSX dock but adds a few cool additions. There are heaps of dock apps out there, and aside from being fast and smooth and easily customisable without fucking around with it, what appealed to me is nowhere on the site that I looked did it mention OSX. It's about adding functionality, not mimicking for the sake of it.

ooookay, so I've been trying to find a half decent free screen capture utility. Oh there are loooads of them out there, and snipping tool comes with windows, and of course there is the trusty old print screen. I have no fuckin idea why no one in the windows world can get something as basic as screen grabbing right.
Having to load the clipboard into a imaging program is several steps too many, and bothering with a UI clicky click click and move it out of the way while I do this... jesus christ go use a mac for five minutes. Any mac, one from 15 years ago even!

So I found this program that seems to do a decent job.

Cropper

http://www.codeplex.com/cropper

You can customise the keyboard shortcuts and a few other things, and it sits there in the background until you decide you want to do a grab of a screen, rectangle, window or the contents of a window. hit your short key, and bam you get a file on your desktop. Now that wasn't hard was it? Thank fuck someone gets it.

Have you tried EverNote? Well worth a look if you haven't. It's more than just a cropping tool but that part of it is quite good and of course you get all the rest. It's actually a really well done app.

Also...rocketdock is great. Used it for years on my old Dell laptop.

Might try Evernote, could help me with my study Smile

Most people probably know this one, but it just occurred to me to post it: Notepad ++ replaces windows notepad and more.
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

After getting sick of hiding/unhiding files& folders (mainly app data) by going into folder options, I looked for an easier way and just discovered this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/keyboard-ninja/keyboard-ninja-toggle-hidden-files-with-a-shortcut-key-in-windows/
It's a little program you run at startup, and ever after, Win+H toggles "show hidden files" Whoohoo!

hrm

I installed notepad++ yesterday, works well for what i wanted it for.

Also, advanced port scanner (useful for finding APs and other network gear).

7zip - why it taken me so long to find this i have no idea, does exactly what i wanted.

And VSO batch resizer, used as a replacement for the XP power tools resizer though it has better functionality and you can save your own default/profiles.
