I imagine they would have stopped anyone from getting into the press conference with guns and knives. Shoes are probably a bit harder to police. Perhaps they could make everyone take their shoes off next time ...then someone will throw a pen or cellphone. Hardly going to do much damage.

It's not what he threw it's more the fact that something was thrown and there was hardly any timely reaction at all from GWB's side. So if someone did manage to sneak in a knife he'd probably have been dead.
