hmmmm could unclephil be the best house dj in auckland?
this question goes out to all those who have seen this wicked dj play.
please share your thoughts if you have seen him play.

i went to ink bar for the free thinking party which had a classy dj lineup of chris cox, sambro, unclephil and benwah. the night was wicked with my highlight been unclephils set which i have to say cemented in my mind that this guy is my choice to be the best dj for house in auckland.

what do you think?

I caught him at the same gig, and his mixing was tight and tune selection bang on the money.

I cant say you could give a title to one sole person but he'd be right up there amongst a few others in my books.

Been ages since I've seen Chris Cox play. I'm really into the funky broken beat stuff, been fusing it with breaks lately so I think I would probably love hearing him.

Yeah Phil is the man, way back when i first started djing, he took me aside after an open decks performance and bought me some beers, told me what I was playing was rad, and then discussed at length which my first camouflage record was (incidentally he had every one up until that point from number 1 up except for one or two... outstanding).

Great dj and selector, anyone remember his sunday sessions at centro?

Ha ha.. Classic. Ask Phil what number Strictly Rhythm were up to when he started... number 250 perhaps. :p

Camouflage isn't exactly a benchmark for much. (fyi, I had their first two release, both by Method Men).

Chris Cox is a legend btw. Love his style and that he doesn't do what all others are doing.

Fuck you're a grumpy old bastard. Laughing

Better be careful, Bob Daktari might think you're trying to muscle in on his jaded old bastard turf. Razz

Meh... I just crack up when people talk about five year old records like they were way back in the day.

For the record, I think Uncle Phil is a good DJ.

Rob ya gotta understand that youve been DJing since some of us were in nappies so in our Gen Y context 5 years does mean back in the day, in my case it pre-dates me even thinking about buying vinyl Cool

The point Mike was trying to make was that Phil took the time to talk to him and encourage him, which says a lot about the mans character, and for us younger enthusiastic and passionate DJs who are about the music and not ego or image it means a lot to us.

Nice! Mr Talk-down-to-everyone just got talked downed to. Get in.
[quote]
I hope it doesnt sounds like hes being talked down to, more enlightened that such postive events that may seem trivial to someone of Rob's stature, actually have an ever lasting positive affect on us younger impressionable DJs, as we do look up to them for guidance and inspiration, and some form of validation that what we are doing, by participating in this beautiful thing called House music, actually means something and has a purpose in our lives. Smile
[quote]
I personally like to invite the younger djs out the back of the club, then lock the door and ridicule them from through the keyhole, while letting the bouncers know there's a dodgy character looking to get in for free...
Cheap thrills.

awesome comments Grobbit, old fucks forget what its like to be fresh, keen and excitable about this music lark - the worst side effect of time/age/whatever
[quote]
technically, Uncle when he's on form is the man! I learnt so much from him when I first started playing out, he was always so keen to give advice and encouragement - Respect!
[quote]
I did forget his energy and the enthusiasm he has for the music he plays... it's not for show, it's from his soul...

could not agree more when i was playing if i was following him or he was taking the decks i would get so fucking shaky that you could bet if i hadnt made any mistakes all night that would be the time i would !!! LOL. but he would never judge as a lot of prima donnas in that scene do, most of them not even half as good as they tink they r! and not a patch on his natural flair and ability. one night as he was about to take over cocked up last bit of my mix and i turned to phil and said I will play one more to redeem myself he looked at me and said u dont have to redeem yourself u been playing the tunes for everyone all night genuine nice guy!!!.
most DJ's hog there set like its gonna make them a million dollars if you walked in the bar while he was playing nine times out of ten he would get u to play couple tunes , one of the best nights i remember was 4 of us playing couple tracks each just fantastic wot music is all about. Any one remember seeing one of his first gigs at "FEEL" when he just arrived from wellywood amazing tunes.
