Heh, I don't pretend to know everything but I've seen a lot of stuff here that I would never have had an opportunity to in NZ and I can't see how many of the trance DJs Ive seen (bar *maybe* a couple of exceptions) can compare technically to what I've seen from the likes of Derrick May, Stacey Pullen, James Zabiela, Richie Hawtin et al.

Not even counting the fact that trance, due its composition and the complexity of melodies doesn't allow the same freedom to chop, change, dissect, and pull stuff together the way that techno/progressive does.

Case in point: Joris Voorns Balance with over 100 tracks on it. It isn't possible to make this sound cohesive with trance...
[quote]
Oh, and Froggy
[quote]
Yeah the JV Balance is awesome. A great mix of Funk, Tech and Electronica. A perfect example of where technology is headed.

I wouldn't say techno DJs are better than trance djs technically its just different as you've mentioned.
[quote]
kurt said:

I would say that the mastery of dozens of mixing tricks and techniques including the proliferation of looping, sampling, layering several tracks over each other simulatneously, keeping everything in key, in time, and all the other intangible parts like reading your crowd etc makes a DJ technically better than one that only has to focus on key mixing, beat matching, intangibles, and maybe the odd sample... but thats just me Razz
[quote]
I was thinking that it would be a lot harder to mix trance up because of it's melodic nature and structure, but that still doesn't count them better DJs than (let's say) techno DJs.
Get creative!

Melodic nature yes, structure no (it's a 4/4, just like techno Razz ). But the melodies incompatibilities can be worked out through key mixing and the EQs.

Trance isn't easy to mix, nobody is claiming that, and the day that I see a trance DJ jamming four turntables (not serato, nor ableton), an effects unit and a sampler, I'll happily eat my words Razz

Yeah, read it. I'm about as sold on that as when I read Sasha was remixing all his tracks on the fly.

Sure he can play the keyboard during his sets, which sounds like a cool addition - but anyone who uses sequencer-based programs in their live performance is basically guaranteed to be playing about 1/5 of what looks live actually live - rather they have tons of pre-made elements which they just jam overtop of.

Don't make out he's standing there real-time coming up with new piece of music. He's changing synth settings and swapping out drums (and buzzing noises Razz).

Yeah I saw the Swedish Crap Mafia playing two finger basslines "live" and everyone was going apeshit.

What point exactly? That the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll is the most overblown, oversold, hammed up, popularist, narcissistic, look-at-me-ma-I'm-a-fucking-superstar-DJ-gen, marketing fuelled piece of garbage that has ever dropped it's bowels on electronic music? Yes? Well in that case, I totally agree Wink
