You have got to be kidding!!!

If once a month is all the time, then maybe I would agree with you.

If you wanna see different acts. Call Kyle, book a night, book the acts you wanna see and promote it properly. At the moment the genres being played down there are the only genres that are getting any support from the public.

If this were the case why has the majority of punters that were regulars stopped going to catalyst.

why is there a thread dedicated to this.(this thread)

IMO

The owners needs to start listening to the punters/customers not the Dj's.

Any business owner would know that his or her customers are priority at all times and feed back such as leithels is gold, and if u like its like the.. 'word on the streets'

my 2 cents

Just cause you don't go there anymore doesn't mean none of the regulars go there anymore.

Also, a handful of regulars is a completely different topic than 'the public' and you of all people should know that by now.

That is all Car

I dont think leathal was talkin bout number's or who is going here gop's, more The DJ's on offer.

You only have to look at the website for a start, and in the flyers it seems to be the local boys holding down .

Which is Great.

I think leathal is saying some fresh music from outsiders might just give it that extra something, which a few people have mentiond to me also, lately has been lacking.

maybe it should have said Howz about seeing these geezer's, or somthing like that.

Comr orund to place leth ill play you most of the styles You mentioned. a tee hee.

Verstyle ran for over 3 years, playing an 'Array' of 'assorted' 'genre's' of 'Dance music' every friday night, almost..

Bye the way 'Sohlbar' are now having lots of Downbeat dub & Reggae, leith on fridays for memeory.

I was talking with Kyle recently, he told me that I was talking with Kyle recently, he told me that (frm a business perspective) things have been on the up and up in the last few months, which must equate to successful nights. The weekend of "Back 2 ya Roots" and "Timmy & Battercell" (13th, 14th May) was a huge weekend, the Satdee nite was the biggest night since he took over so he's happier with things but there's definitely still room for improvement.

BUT! back to the point of the thread, More styles would be great at Cata, I think there's room here for promoters to get in there. Akomplis has his hands full with Breaks, and between him and some AK promoters DnB. Gopal's got HH covered but there's plenty of room for other genres/promoters to get in there....
[quote]
If people in this thread believe that Catalyst is quieter now because of what genre is being played then you need to look a little wider in your view.

Hospo in Hamilton is definaley not as busy as it was 12-18 months ago, people just aren't going out as much as they used to, ask any bar owner the reason for this & you will draw a blank response. I for one can't work out why but the streets & bars are not as busy as they used to be.

Owners/promoters are really reluctant to spend to much cash on production of events etc due to the uncertainty of how many will actually turn up. It a sign of how bad the industry is @ the moment.

Maybe people don't go out because they are all working... Rolling Eyes

After all the unemployment rate is really low at the mo.. Rolling Eyes

There are only two days in a weekend for those who work a five day week and with our culture of indulgence it is more than likely that one of those days will be lost to a hangover or sleep. That only leaves one day to hang out with your kids, paint your fence, do your washing or finish the song that you want to write.

I say play on those big nites or whateva because for most peeps it is only gonna happen once a month...and that one time has to be super duper good time.

One day we will be like Norway and work less and play more..one day...

Another thing that just occurred to me....

This is our first winter with the no-smoking law in place and it will have negative effect imo. The Hamilton public are a fickle bunch as it is, it gets pretty damn cold at nights (much more than Aucks) and on those icy cold/rainy Friday nights it can be a ghost town. Add to that the fact that smokers now have to stand out in it....and just they're more likely to just stay home.

Totally agree with you, there are plenty of variables at play here, things certainly aren't like they 'used to be'. What I was getting at, is that there is a severe lack of drum n bass in Hamilton now. No other genre interests me (I'm in no way dissing other genres, just no others float my particular boat), so I have become an ex-Catalyst regular. There are others like me, so hence my statement that Catalyst has lost regulars.

intrinsik,

I did it, so fuck it, so can the rest of them Laughing

nearly 4 months now!!!!!!!

Anyway promoters, you will all know (or should know) how fickle hamilton is. Although the 'nite life' has developed somewhat down there, its still the tron and its still governed by frickin rugby....mark my words, in winter if theres a big game, there will be a big nite...always the same......

Also, if someone wants to do something different to re-kindle things gone by, then some-one needs to throw a warehouse party similar to what felun and crew did at the claudelands showgrounds with Greg, Chaye, etc etc. These are always a good vehicle for getting frsh blood coming to your club..

Also has anyone ever targeted the Uni and Polytech??

I mean, there is some of your target market right in front on you..../why do you think Bath St and other dundedin clubs absolutely rock 9 months of the year.....its the students.....and fuck me hamilton even has the same demographic as dunna's!!!!!

And i agree with kas to, especially for us older types

Unfortunately there's a lack of Hammy based DnB DJ's at the moment and while Akomplis is pretty occupied with Breaks (and life outside the club) he is in the process of collaborating with some AK promoters to bring down AK based DJ's on a regular basis. This Saturdee nite me and melFunkshun are coming down to lay down some DnB so cruz on down.

What?? Confused Theres a lack of hamilton dnb dj's? Laughing

I could list a quite few instantly including myself, who actually live in hamilton! and play dnb ONLY!

Also myself and HSD have a now started our weekly Drum n Bass show on MAXX FM 107.1 every thurday 6pm -8pm. We will be giving away loads of things from promo's to tickets to events and gigs, to having exclusive interviews and mixes with the biggest DnB producers and DJ's and both.. from around the world including NZ.. keep it locked! Pink Winky

SO to say theres a lack is complete non-sense...

SO, I feel that comment dosen't warrant merrit sorry!

Why should we be bringing down akl dj's all the time?
Why don't we start bringing DJ's up from wellis and the South Island?... Maybe a reason punters are bored!
same AKL dj's!

We h-towners should be supporting our own dj's who play out already or are up-coming (and theres lots in the dance genre including heaps in the DnB genre, lots of you aint even noticed in h-town), and some like myself that regularly play around NZ more than the auckland dj's play in akl (in some cases the h-town dj's in h-town)... you guys are/or wana bring down.

ALSO as a DJ.. DJ's are IMO to keep current in form of tunes if they are playing out or wana play out, which isn't the case here now for some genres and Dj's that have been playing at catalyst... recently which MAY attribute to some of leithels comments aswell.

Anyways...
This thread seems to have lost its original ideals that leithel talked bout in the beginning.

Well hell, it seems you disagree with my comments PJ, that’s fine. This is a public forum and everyone’s entitled to their opinion. The correct way to rebut something is to do so in a constructive way and back it up with fact.

You however have resorted to using disrespectful remarks and sarcasm, traits reminiscent of immaturity or perhaps you’re just bitter about something and using this medium as a vent?

quote:
I could list a quite few instantly including myself

*smirk* Funny you should mention yourself, something I’ve noticed your very good at.
Perhaps I should have been more specific; we have a lack of DnB DJ's in Hamilton who are actually welcome at Catalyst.

If there are plenty of DnB DJ's then where are they? Anyone’s welcome to approach Kyle for gigs, anyone reading this that’s keen should go for it.

quote:
Why don't we start bringing DJ's up from wellis and the South Island?... Maybe a reason punters are bored!
same AKL dj's!

DJ's frm Welly or South island is a great idea, but you're bringing this up with the wrong guy, I just mix, I don't promote gigs. As I’m the only AK DJ that’s been down on a regular basis I assume the "same AKL DJ's" means me? Well, if the punters are bored with me they've sure got a funny way of showing it Wink

quote:
And for people to make comments for the owner of catalyst is crack up to...

I just repeated what I was told word for word, truthfully. However I do realise being truthful is a concept you find difficult to grasp PJ, so I’ll let that one slide Wink

All in all I can't help but feel you have some deep seated frustrations, if your little online rant has made you feel better then that’s an upside I suppose, but if you wanted your point’s to actually amount to anything you’ve failed, for two reasons:

As stated above I don’t promote gigs or book DJ’s

I have no interest in anything that dribbles out of your mouth

If however you feel that ranting at me some more will be beneficial in some way then I’ll be in town this weekend, pop in and say hi, we can do this face to face….

I think what you guys are forgetting is that I’m up in Aucks; I’ve had no contact with, nor seen Kyle since the 13th of May. If he is indeed failing to return your calls then I can understand your frustration, but I’m totally unaware of it.

Bullshit about promoters? What exactly are you referring to? I said in an earlier post that “I THINK” there’s room for promoters to get in there. I said this because I believe this to be true, if it turns out I’m wrong then I’m happy to stand corrected. You know me better then this Laff – why would I blatantly lie – what would I hope to gain from it?

And when someone I consider a mate insinuates I’m telling “FUCKIN LIES” it doesn’t impress me at all.

I think bringing back Mofo’s an awesome idea, it has a great track record and support and there’s definitely an interest.

quote:
Unless you like Nu break's, Hard Trouser or Auckland DJ's.

What is this hatred you guys have of AK DJ’s? Are you referring to me? I lived and grew up HTown for 27 damn years man, it’s my home town and I come down to play because 1) I’m asked to and 2) I’m keen on supporting the scene down there, just like you Laff.

Perhaps you refer to the talk of bringing AK DJ’s down on a regular basis? The plan is to bring down DJ’s like Omen, Funkshun, Riddle, Presha, not to replace Hammy talent but play along side them, are you saying this is a bad idea?

Again I get the feeling there’s some frustration/anger under all this, what I can’t quite fathom is why I seem to be the target of it.
I don’t have beef with anyone, I have respect for some people and I have no-respect for others it’s that simple.

Well bro, I'm sorry to hear that Kyle is not returning your calls and I don't have an explanation for that.

As for the minimum DJ wage thing, well personally I have to say that Kyle has been rather fair and reasonable with me and I don't really have any complaints in dealing with him.

You also have to realise that this is his first stint at owning a club and he is experimenting to find different things that work.

I know there has been a lack of DnB down there and I think that should be addressed. The fact is a certain self promoting DJ went about his business in such an unprofessional manner that perhaps Catalyst management has been a wee bit put off the whole genre. I'm sure with time and fresh blood this will be put right again.

big ups leithel - new ideas to evolve the scene is what keeps the ball rolling

the dnb is good there....the breaks are good there....the hh is good there..and in other clubs the house is good there....but there's nothing wrong with widening the genre and culture...

you guys ever thought that half the punters are sick of the 'behind the scenes bullshit'???? cause it ain't squeeeky clean and everyone gets on dandy...

On a personal note - you guys think you got it alittle rough pleasing the crowd, contenting the scene etc - the people who make this a culture unto it's own?? - try to do promote and throw events over here and get yah very spirit ripped out and shoved up ya arse...then you'll get the picture that you guys are ALL in a postion to make things happen with the right attitude towards each other (helps for a start) you are in a picture perfect enviroment with clubs/venues coming out your arse topped with a shitload of people that are in need of a fuck load of damn fine old and new music/events to blow their shoes off....there will never be enough music/dj's/events to ever go around in my opinion - i say bring it on!!

Sorry.. my post was not blaming P or meth on current woes ova in htown...I was just merely posting an opinion.

In regards to earlier posts... It seems some people especially you intrinsik have taken my posts totally out of text and seem to have taken things rather personallly which was not intended for anyone, rather a general commment on many things. and hence I mentioned at the end of my post that the thread had de-railed from its original track.

The comment about same AK dj's.
I was not reffering to any specific person more a general thing i noticed across the board of dance clubs in hamilton... Take a step back and think about it! 2-3 years anyways... Think!

Second my comment regarding the management of catalyst is my opinion currently... and i don't think it was disrespectful or sarcastic or anything else u mentioned.

(Gerneal audience)
Some people on here seem to get the notion that since I have nothing to do with Catalyst anymore on a promotional level that I am spiteful or unhappy. This is NOT the CASE! For you to say things like im not welcome to catalyst is disrespectful! What a joke! the only people that think im not welcome are people like urself intrinsik, and most of your friends which happen to post on here regualrly as well.
Guess what! I don't care anymore, haven't and never will. I rose far above that in many ways a years ago.

Also...Laff only elaborated on the truth regarding the lack management or delegation at catalyst, with his wanting to book dates and nobody returing repeated calls.

There is a real serious lack of management skills and promotion at the mo., and nobody is taking heed or responsibilty! I say this cause remember, I did used to promote and go regularly to catalyst like many others. And you can still gauge this by the lack of.. no promotions in flyers, posters, on here, even groove guide now. No website.. Nothing.. Punters don't know what to expect anymore.
Again..MY opinion.. and seems to be others on her as well.

Also I did refer to myself as being one of the htown dj's playing DnB... but again there are plenty.. and they don't even use biggie or care much for it. Many of them do think along the lines of what leithel and laff has mentioned regarding the promo topic and new dj's and music policy.

Again this isn't about me at all.. sorry to those who think it is or think i have turned it into that. I haven't! I am making opinions based on facts and observations.

Thanks..

I'm with Cosha, about organising new fresh events to give this town and the people that go out in it a new perspective on things and fresher options. Regardless of Genres we all have great and individual ways of expressing the true flavors of an underground night out.. Theatres,Warehouse Spaces,Industrial Areas,Climbing Centres or whatever it takes to get yourself a new and interesting place to bring people. They just dont see enough of it..

If there is still dought amonst promotors about pulling numbers then combine a party one night give yourselves the ability to throw a big party with much less risk. There are venues here we could use for sure. Each Promotors works to pull a small minimum number and the party is safe. Then work hard on Promo. A few flyers in the mailbox outside catalyst is no promotion. Its all been said here.. Hit the streets, hit the shops, hit the magazines, hit the radio, hit the net, hit the uni's, hit the backpackers... Yep it takes work but without it you cant progress.

Theres no room for self arrogance or big ego's when your trying to collectivly build a scene. I believe if we're all working a little tighter and sharing input and even nights then perhaps the people in this town will start to discover there is actually a 'scene' outside of rugby, beer and cheap bunk ups that they can enjoy as a whole and not based around one bar,club,venue,ect...

My whole outburst really came from me not being able to do a release party for my 12",As Catalyst was booked solid with hard house & breaks, seriously, every weekend, "what about the next one"?
Breaks, after that? hard house, after that? breaks, after that? hard house, Ok after that? breaks.
i mean that no one's fault but mine for not booking sooner i guess.

I dont tread on eggshell's, and ill allways voice an opinion, (whether you choose to call it self promotion or whatever) thats how i see it.

Intrinsik, Gopal, felun, Qbik, Seeka D, Macro, Mr Mukura, S&M, Leithal, Cosha, Sophie & Charlie, Kas, Twincam, Akomplis, Vhari, Adam N, Advokit, Vuaghn H,All Htown massive know that I have nothing but the Upmost respect for what you do, as Muso's DJ's friends or whatever.... its just discussion & debates I hope we all realise that through a good discusion we can come to agrement's about thing's like this to make it better.
Its very hard to come to conclusions with the heckling tho.....

Intrinsik & Cosha sneakily trying to call themselves AKL DJ's lol, your as Htown as the rest of us.

I don't think I’ve ever tried to call myself an AK DJ *don't think so anyways, brain don't work as good these days* I wasn't aware of any other AK DJ's that have been down lately is all, so just questioned the mention of AK DJ's in earlier posts as to if that applied to me. But to clear up any potential confusion it always falls back to the resounding truth that.........

there are people (like me) that are happy to help promote gigs to support the local scene...i'm always checking out events on the net and cos I'm not seeing enough of whats happening in h-town i'm usually headin to party's in aucks...so new music at catalyst or not - just get the word out there about whats on...and I'll happily spend my petrol money at your bar instead!

for a start, somebody give me some flyers, i work at the uni gym so I can make sure our lovely members are seeing them, and i can drop some off at grind cafe on campus too...see its not hard

and if you don't have flyers, god damn, i'll make them for you Smile

Nice positive feedback there bronstar, someone helping someone else out in the dance scene is un heard of???? most people just stand back point out the negative bits & take the piss out of each other as per most of this thread.

I work in P&M so I can see (IMO) what needs to be done - its easy to just look in from the outside, make judgements and point out the obvious, but I'd rather be doing something about it... Smile

Hello to everybody who has been involved with Catalyst in some form or another. I don't usually reply to the posts on the website, however I feel I need to in this case.
Catalyst has undergone changes since I have taken over, I have listened to many sources, being the Customers and the DJ's, and have valued their opinons when making these decisons. However you will never please all the people all the time.
The one thing that I have taken from this thread is, the passion that exists for Catalyst, which I am grateful for. The one comment I would like to make; if Catalyst is playing the genre you prefer, then come along and support it, and before 3am.
I would like to thank everyone who has been invovled and supported myself and Catalyst through the past 8 months You all know who you are, but a special thanx goes out to Dan B. It is the people who make Catalyst what it is, so bring it together, get along and revive the Hamilton Dance scene.

yeah Dan B is hot Shocked

So in conclusion.

Some said yess, some said no.
Most sat on the fence and tried to look cool pointing finger at those trying to have an opinion in such a genrealised call from leithal. The shit stirrir Froggy .

I got lost in saying " gee wizz, Intrinsik those are funky Lions and yes, yes I think it is time for a change Leithal, and i think thats what catalysts vision is/was -new music..... but im having trouble booking a night" before i got diagnosed with tourettes syndrome and ADD. thats what I really ment to say and should have said.

Hard house was/is allways the Bread & Butter earner for Catalyst....from my experience there.... and you know what, probably will be for a long time.

and Breaks night's a plenty....thats a GREAT thing.

That did not at all mean to say anyone is doing a shit job because they arent promoting "gothic electro dub bleepy bloop bloop surf house hard drum.....emo...core"
Which is what I play now as a DJ first and formost.

I just ment Its been hard to get a night.

And was very passionate about missing a release party for MYyyyyy, beware the self hype (Macro & HSD<(thats me) me me me big time now got a record out, Katchafire remix 12" vinyl being played in UK by top DJ's, stubbed my toe this morning but i dont care coz i got a record out, maybe now Ill be accepted by the cool kids in Hamilton, and possibly get a girlfriend..............nah, wonder if there are shops that sell "cool" in a bottle, wonder if...oh shit), Party at.....where else would i have a party?

Music Music

You don't have ADD or Tourettes Laff. Its far more likely that you suffer from a Narcissistic Personality Disorder (look it up, you'll be amazed) combined with paranoid tendencies which are the result of marijuana psychosis.

PJ, on the other hand, doesn't necessarily meet the criteria for any one particular personality disorder. His major problem is a remarkably small IQ combined with a really big mouth.

Carry on.
