Thoughts on Orcon as ISP ?

Just decided to sign up to Orcon as I've had enough of the slowness of xtra broadband.
How do people find Orcon?? good/ bad stories??

Can't go wrong mate. They are good ...

We went thought a bunch of shit when they rolled out ADSL2. Orcon fucked up, Chorus fucked up and neither of them could be fucked taking ownership. Our connection was basically fucked for about a month, with ongoing issues. It took us upgrading to a business plan to get better support out of them.

Having said that, when our connection is working fine (which it usually is now) it's great.

They do go through periods of their international bandwidth being overloaded however.


16-17mbit not unheard of on a good day. Also can torrent at 1.4MB/s on a good day, and sometimes not at all between 7pm and midnight. (Pitt Street, Airdale St exchange afaik)





Summary: better than most with small amounts of uselessness.

Yeah I think a few of us went through a fair amount of pain when they rolled out the Orcon+ network. The dust seems to have settled and its working well now. They do need to buy more international or get onto the Southern Cross tho.

Really? I'm quite surprised, that was one thing I remember Orcon being good with. I'm happy enough with my provider EXCEPT for the odd time I try to watch a youtube video in the evening. At that point I get pretty pissed off.

So tempted to change with Xtra speeds being what they are but I'm on the unlimited download package that Xtra released for a very short period of time. Just can't bring myself to give it up.

Really wanting better speeds so I can watch the ice hockey online though!

So its not "Xtra speeds" its the other leechers you share your bandwidth pool with, shame

Well I was also on the same plan. But with the speed being so pathetic my usage over past year on average has been under 30G a month anyway so switching over isn't so bad. Although I do think with better speeds I'll end up using a fair bit more..

yeah iv thought about going with orcon

but 1 thing iv found that most isp suck on is ping in online gaming etc - xtra has been the only good 1 iv found but bloody xpensive

Ok so I'm all connected with Orcon. Browsing wise it's perfect. Much better speeds etc.. having some issues with torrents though.
Does anyone know if they limit torrent speeds at peak times etc???

When things are particularly congested yes. In saying that I was getting 900kb/sec at about 8pm tonight.

We just switched from a business plan back to residential, and have noticed a slight drop in international speeds, assuming lamer bandwidth pool.

Purple+ Naked, 15gb +50GB = $119.95. For an extra $20/mo we can bump that up to 115gb.

It's acting pretty odd all round. I got one torrent d/loading at 1MB/s all of a sudden and others still stuck and red. Ports forwarded etc.. not sure what the issues is

Try forcing all connections to encrypted in your client.

Public or private trackers?

Forcing didn't do much different.
These are private. Public ones are ok.
