It's not tax and spend, it's not incandescent lightbulbs, it's not the RMA

It's the fucking anti-smoking nazis

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10738348

The ADHB doesn't want to hire smokers
They want to ban smoking on the sidewalk

Because it's harmful? Ummm. So is exhaust gas. Should we ban cars from the CBD? If I'm in town I inhale a fuckton more exhaust gases than I inhale second hand cigarette smoke.

You know what else is harmful? Promiscuity. Should the ADHB not hire people with more than x sexual partners
Fuck, my sport - football - and rugby, soccer, league - are also harmful. Guess the ADHB shouldn't hire contact sportsmen.

Fuck you fucking nazis.

VAD-D,
DOESN'T SMOKE BUT WILL DIE FOR THE RIGHTS OF THOSE WHO DO

wouldn't it be discrimination to not hire smokers by policy?

Nope, as it's not covered by the HRA as a specific protected category
Same as you can discriminate on good looks legally

I think it's perfectly acceptable for a HEALTH board to not hire smokers ^_^

Although I wonder if they have a no fat people clause too - probably not.

If they smoke or are obese then they clearly have a poor understanding of health.

understanding of and personal practices are not one and the same - we're human

its their choice how they live their lives... you know some drink, do drugs (illegal), go to dance parties, listen to dubstep, have unprotected sex ... yet smoking is a make or break on their potential employ by this proposal?

as a unhealthy fat ugly smoker I demand THE VERY BEST from those vested to run and staff our health services

god knows I've paid a fuckload of excise taxes for my probable future health needs

Yea, what bob d said.

If I'm going for surgery and the choices are
Dr A, who's good and a non-smoker
or
Dr B, who's brilliant, and a smoker

Guess which one I'm going to prefer to cut me open?

Also smoking nurses are more likely to turn a blind eye to me sneaking out for a smoke, IV drip in tow and all :>

Well... hospitals already have a bias against people who are smokers in need of treatment - especially cardiothoracics. Being a smoker (even if you try to deny it) can get you put at the bottom of many lists - even ones seemingly unrelated to smoking. The medical profession in general has a very high disdain for people who come to them for help but who clearly don't bother to help themselves by mitigating the some of really obvious health dangers out there.

But we're now suddenly worried about them being mean to smokers who work at or visit hospitals?
