The pronunciation game...

It's easy enough to not have to think about how to pronounce particular DJ's names when all you have to do is read/write about them. But then you come unstuck when you actually have to ask someone about them or worse still... announce the name of the artist on radio

Some of my favourite producers I dont even know how to pronounce their name and have so far gotten away with this by either mumbling, saying it fast, or avoiding it altogether

This thread is to help avoid these uncomfortable situations before they arise. So, if you know, provide pronunciation, if you don't feel free to ask for it...

The first ones I need are...

Gui Boratto (I've been saying his first name as "Guy"
DJ Koze
Wighnomy Brothers (I think I have the second part down)

the beauty of radio is you don't have to say everything... in my radio days if I came across artist/track names I couldn't pronounce I simply wouldn't

there is a lot to be said for publishing your playlist on a blog/forum/radio stations site

of course if you insist it doesn't hurt to tell your audience you are unsure and are making a honest attempt - a good chance to throw in some line about how retarded you are in a amusing and ratings winning manner

Heh, I do publish the lists, but sometimes when I'm getting on one of my big "ZOMG THIS TRACK IS SO AWESOME I MIGHT JUST PLAY IT AGAIN RIGHT NOW" trips, I usually has to tell people what the song is

Sometimes I give people a list of possibilities of what I think it might be, like a tune I was playing once by DJEEP where I reeled off the list DJ EEP, D'Jeep, D'Yeep, D. Jeep etc. I even ran a competition for someone to tell me until I realised I wasn't going to be able to pick a winner as any answer that anyone gave me could be right as far as I knew

His name is Kevin. I've heard him mentioned in interviews both ways. It was debated a lot after he did some releases under the artist name '7' and also with Cliff Saint-Cyr as 'Saint 7'.

I can find out for sure - the guy who signed many of his best works is in NZ nowdays.

So according to Matt Darey, Gui Boratto is Joowee BoRATto... hmmm.

Also Richard Villalobos. It's a spanish name = Richard Veeya-lobos. (same as in the food Paella which is Pie-aaya)

Amazing how many people get that wrong despite the pronunciation of the "ll" being relatively widely known. See: Mallorca (interchangeable with Majorca)

Never heard him called Richard though

Actually I was watching a Luciano interview (I think pronounced Loo-chiano) where he mentioned Villalobos's name and proncounced it as "Rikardo Veeyalobo" - with a 'k' sound and didn't the 's' at the end is silent.

Pronounced 'terry' in homage to Todd Terry.
Or So websta reckons.

KOZE = kotsa & it means puke in german

both ricardo and luciano are chilean so expect some departure from received Spanish pronunciation

in South America ll is pronounced like a soft j as in zh and not the y sound as in Spain, though if memroy serves me correct, Andalucian pronunciation may be like that of the south americans

gli in italian is like the ll in Spanish that is correct robw
