I have been offered the chance of re-starting The Package in Wellington and I thought i would do a bit of research to see what people thought!

Im looking at kick starting with an online version and then possibly venturing into print

I want to expand to include quiz nights, poker nights, and sports coverage as well, in an easy to use and filtered format

Im aware the gig guide area is well covered in Welly - but I cant find anything comprehensive - most places include the key venues but nowhere has a full bodied list for everyone

Do you think im flogging a dead horse?
Do you think it needs to be in printed form or could we just have 5 or so key posters placed around town?
What changes would you suggest if any?

Any other ideas?

The Package doesn't exist anymore?!?!? Shocked

Hi Claire! Wave

I think if you were to revive it, you'd be right to make it more comprehensive "what's on" guide than just gigs/music/parties. Opens it up to a wider audience, get every damn bar/nightspot in town on board, perhaps even suburban ones too?

yeah it folded in September last year due to a number of problems

I agree with you - basically if there is something happening no matter what it is - I would hope to have it listed on there

My aim is to have every bar/pub in central wellington to start with!

I miss the package Crying or Very sad

It was cool with all the stuff in it including arts etc, I hate The Groove Guide, it's so flicken content free and I can't be bothered buying the bigger version. Man, I even wrote some reviews of Fevahs and Hard Factions for it back in the day.

I say bring it back, as long as I can be a reporter and I get to interview Metallica when they eventually come back to New Zealand, I promise it'll be the best interview ever in Package history.

No, seriously.

im not sure about bringing back the printed version - do you think it would be as good being just onlne or was the print part what made it?

There is a copycat out there called the Bandwagon but its pretty lame but the prined version looks exactly like the package

physical media is dead!!

what is "The Package"? I'm not familiar but I'm guessing from the sound of things it is like a gig listing website with articles about the artists as well???

if it is then my answer is yes, do it

from what I have seen of the gig guide websites for Wellington they are an abortion Neutral

Yeah I've seen that, ghey.

TBH I never used the online package at all, not once. I can't pick that up in a cafe can I and stick it my pocket? No I don't ahve a flash phone either.

The printed version was what did it for me, I looked forward to it every Wednesday. Sad I know but it was cool being able to pick it up in a bar or cafe wherever and go, "oh sweet that's on in 30 minutes, let's fucken go!"

the package was classic

Awesome, do it!

The whole beauty of the package was that you could pick it up in a cafe or takeaway (such as hell pizza) and sit there reading it, take it home and stick it on the flat fridge. It is nought without print version Wink

I'd be keen to get involved in some way. Smile

Package was awesome!

I love 3DWorld which comes out once a week here in Sydney. Real interesting read, info on gigs, artists, people can write in and have there say, competitions (I got to meet Armin van Buuren coz i won one! Best night of my life!)
There website is http://www.threedworld.com.au/ but it doesn't do them much justice, the mag is much better! I love picking it up each Monday and reading it. Smile

Bring back The Package I say, but better! So it appeals to more people.

The difficult part of that , is to do just that.. Get every bar/pub on board.

Some get fizzy to start with then cant be bothered sending the info out..

Wellington needs more talk to a random nights Razz

would you have bars update their own info through a content management thing or email to an editor to put it up?
[quote]
I will do the updating of the site

Just for an update - i have decided to go ahead with the idea.

Firstly I will be relaunching the online presence to see how the market reaction is.

Watch this space

What were some of the problems that brought it down in the first place? Might give us an idea of things to improve on.

Yeah I'd start with an online version. Really comprehensive and user friendly. Then a stripped down print version for the central Welly venues etc. Or maybe start with the print version first to get it up and running. It's a brand that everyone associates with print, so you'll have readers straight away. Then advertise the the site through it. Just an idea off the top of my head at the moment but I'm sure a few more will pop in. Exciting!

Oh and Hai Clare! Smile
