CMA - All Over Interview
Eamon (e): Did you feel a lot of pressure making this album
compared to the last one? Since it was so well received? (Props to
David aka MidevoL for this question and the next one)
Lucky (L):I didn't feel a lot of pressure but I was conscious of
the anticipation & expectations for CMA2. But I knew what Grouch &
I were capable of, and even though Overall is a fan favorite we
didn't put too many extra's on worrying about topping it. If we
concentrated on that energy I think the result would seem forced.
When we make anything we want it to better than the previous
material we put out.
Grouch (G): Of course we were aware of people’s expectations but,
actually creating music is such an escape from pressures and such
that when you get into the groove of things there’s no stress,
just fun. I think both of the albums are good representations of
top quality independent intelligent hip hop then and now.
(e): Since there was a gap between this album and the last album
do you think the difference in sound will cause a lot of
complaints? I.e., the old Legends sound and new Legends sound
debate?
(L): I don't think there will be too many complaints about this
one! But you never know. If you know about The CMA you know we
don't believe in being boxed into any sort of the cliche
"underground" hip hop categories. We make what we feel is the
beat.
(G): What there is "a lot" of is good music and people who like
that music. There are a handful of people, mostly those who post
on our own internet site (who would've guessed) who wait for new
music to come out and then rip it to shreds. I could care less
about those people. They have problems. I'm confident that this
album will be well received by the majority of listeners. We're
offering a money back guarantee!
(E): Do you guys ever have writer's block (especially for this
album) and how do you get over it? Grouch, do you ever have
"producer's block" and how do you get over that? (Thank you Chris
Maslow for the question)
(L): If the beats are dope I never have writers block (knocking on
wood!).. We have concepts & chorus block sometimes though! We try
not to repeat ourselves. The problem we faced with this album was
the actual time we had available to work on it. Between tours,
shows & daily life, love and business we both have crazy schedules.
(G): I can't do anything when I'm tired. If it doesn't
automatically flow when I sit down to create I don't force it. For
me, there are empty moments. That goes for producing and writing.
The best songs come easily.
(E): Who are you guys really feeling right now that is out there
in any kind of genre? (Thank you "Lauren" for the question)
(L): I'm feeling a few songs on that new De La Soul album (That
Jake One beat & MF Doom's verses, the shopping bags single & the
song w/ Common) I like some Amp Fiddler. Jaylib, Broken Social
Scene, Little Brother/Foreign Exchange, Kanye West, I like
Eminem's Mosh lyrics & Yukmouth's delivery on that Game diss!
(G): Raphael Saadiq, Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, Zap mama, E-40, Andre
3000, Brother Ali, JC, Casual, Coldplay, Ghostface, Pigeon
John........
(E): Kanye's album, "The College Dropout" caused a bit of a stir
because of the title and some of the skits and I know that you
have sort of hinted at the idea that "traditional routes" of
education aren't all that they're cracked up to be, so how do you
guys feel about higher education (college)?
(L): I think college is great for people serious about getting
paper credit for the professional world. But If you are a good
hustler and know the right people you don't need it. I want to get
a degree. If you aren't serious about school don't waste your
money.. Learn a trade.
(G): Whatever keeps your mind open to learning new things is what's
right for you. When I was younger I couldn't sit in a classroom. I
felt too confined, I quit school and traveled the world and
learned a lot. I made a job of underground hip hop, not everyone
can do that, especially now. I taught myself how to use computers
and learned how to operate studio equipment on my own because that
was something I was interested in. I think now I could benefit
from some formal music/studio classes but early on I had to do it
on my own. If I had wanted to be a photographer, I would have
taught myself, if I wanted to build houses I would have learned
how to do that. I think that the most important thing is finding
out what it is you want to do. After you know that, it all depends
on how bad you want it. If you have no drive or heart behind what
you’re trying to achieve you'll fail in college or anywhere else.
You can definitely use college as a tool to get where you want to
be but it may not be necessary for everyone. Figure out what you
want to do first. I try not to promote being a college dropout
anymore.
(E): We're coming close to the end of the year and Christmas so
what do you guys want for Christmas, and what are your New Year's
Resolutions going to be?
(L): For Christmas I want a laptop & an Ipod. My New Years
resolution is to be completely honest with myself and my loved
ones and face the consequences that may come.
(G): I want world peace, clean air to breathe and water to drink
(yeah right). I'm not doing resolutions anymore. So far I've
broken those 20 something years in a row.
(E): Tell me something that people (fans) might not know about
you?
(L): I don't know... I'm pretty revealing in my raps. I usually
put it all out there. Hmmmm...lemme see, I live in a dangerous
neighborhood and I'm trying to move out of it right now so please
buy this album.
(G): I'm one of two guys in Living Legends without a tattoo. Also,
for those who always inquire about this, I don't have a day job.
Not since I used to deliver pizzas in 95'.
(E): How do you guys feel about the election and what do you think
is going to happen over the next 4 years?
(L): I think the election was a sad display of the ignorance this
country embodies. The next 4 years may be the most difficult we
have ever seen in our lives. I'm ready to be outta here. Or maybe
it will just be the same old shit.
(G): Disgusting, they cheated (again) and motherfuckers (including
myself) aren't going too physically do shit about it (again).
Fools need to ride on the white house. That's what I hope happens
in the next four years.
(E): Have you been influenced by anybody while you were growing up
(musicians, family, friends) to cause you to touch on political
and social topics in your raps? (Thank you to "TIKIBOOH" for the
question)
(L): I listened to early Freestyle Fellowship, Krs-One, P.E., Def
Jeff and etc. That influenced my angle on things. Also I've read a
lot of the conspiracy books and watched lectures on Bohemian Grove
and shit so that leaks out into my raps sometimes. My uncle
Micheal was a believer in extra terrestrials and he made me
believe.. Stevie Wonder had message and beautiful music and
harmony...all these things and more have affected my style and
perspective.
(G): Growing up in Oakland with little money and listening to hip
hop got my head in the right place real quick. I remember
everything when I write raps no matter how easy it may get for me
now. I've been influenced by so many people from Mom to NWA. It's
important to us to report on what's going on in the world because
music is such a powerful medium. Sometimes kids don't actually
listen to anything else.
(E): What did you think of P.Diddy's "Citizen Change" campaign?
(L): I don't know what that is. Is it that "vote or die" shit? If
it is, then that some bullshit. Diddy is just a publicity whore.
(G): I'm cool with it. I respect P Diddy as a business man and
rather hear him or anyone for that matter pushing a positive
message than a negative one. There's so many rumors going on about
young people and voting. I'm sure his campaign did something but
it's just so hard to tell with the cheating that goes on with
these elections now. To me, when there's cheating involved and
accepted, speculation is damn near pointless.
(E): Tom, how was Peru? Would you go back or is there plans to go
back?
(L): Peru was a lot of fun for me. The US dollar is worth a lot
over there so things are cheap. The hip hop scene is very small
but the potential is there. I think Omni and I were the first
underground mc's to ever rap there. But the people who saw us
loved it. They are mostly poor though so you aren’t going to
bubble out there off of hip hop. I will go back there on my way to
Brasil in Feb. 2005..oh yeah, A lot of the women in South America
are very beautiful with lots of booty and no Hollywood girl
attitude! Learn Spanish my brother!
(E): What's up next for you guys?
(L): We are going to try to let people soak up the new album, do
some spot dates & in-stores, get some press and get the CMA name
out there cause I still think it's like "CMA? I never heard of
em!" We want to do a "All Over" tour but the offers and interest
from most of the venues and promoters was blah! We will see what
up after the album drops. Other than that I'm going to start
working with G&E and Todd Mumford on getting the new Legends album
ready and then I'm going to go to Australia after X-Mas to do some
shows with Murs..our first show is Dec. 29th in Adelaide with De
La Soul, then Dec. 30th @ Revolver in Melbourne.. It was
originally a trip to record the Underbosses album but we aren't
going to do that album till 2006 cuz Murs has 4 albums coming out
in '05!!
(G): Platinum fronts, Hummers and Maybachs, Spinnin' Double L
Chains...
(E): Anything you want to say in closing?
(G): R.I.P Mac Dre and ODB. Thanks to all the fans who continue to
hold us up.
(L): Thank you guys for the love & support. Watch out for the New
LLcrew shit because we are not playing around. Its about to happen
my peoples. Peace & Legends Baby!
