Sebastian Wild - La Terraza
Over this summer I took a step back from DJing absolutely every weekend and made the conscious decision to attend some of the largest festivals and events across Australasia to find inspiration for the coming year and into the future. Some of these larger events included Future Music Festival (both Sydney & Melbourne!), Summadayze, Rhythm & Vines, Big Day Out & Oxygen. Across all these fantastic events I had the privilege of critiquing some of the worlds finest DJ’s. Among the list was Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Stephan Bodzin, Above & Beyond, Sander Kleinenberg, Grandmaster Flash, DJ Numark, Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Angelo, Markus Schulz, Wolfgang Gartner, just to name a few! I found each of these artists truly amazing in their own right, each excelling in their chosen field to provide sets that truly do push the limits of DJing on a technical, performance and musical level. These DJ’s in particular created an unmistakeable vibe amongst the crowd, built from flow, enthusiasm and an element of surprise combined with a hint of musical history.
La Terraza draws upon aspects from each of these artists, opening up a techier, groovier side of house, techno and breaks that I haven’t previously put out in CD form before. Over the last few years of watching big artists play, I’ve come to the realisation that many of them don’t really conform to a specific genre. They simply play awesome music that the audience loves, regardless of its title. Therefore it’s a pleasure to say that I will be continuing to explore this vein of music well into the future, and will be using it to expand my sound further alongside the other genres & sub genres I play.
Launching the CD I’ve selected a track called “A Time for Giving†from a very dear friend of mine, Mr Squatch. In my opinion, he is easily one of the best producers in NZ. If you enjoyed this track, please support it by downloading it for FREE from the Delicious Music site: www.delicious.co.nz. Following that, I shift through an array of different types house before moving into a slightly techier and harder sound and finally finishing up on an electro and breaks tip.
Whilst on my summer journeys I also came to the realisation that I needed a platform to continue DJing as I do, yet have the ability to edit and effectively remix music on the fly. Looking at other artists out there, there were several currently doing what I wanted. Eddie Halliwell recently launched his “Ed-it†concept, with a mixture of Jazz Mutant hardware & Ableton Live programming, which sold me at first. However it dawned on me the practicality of actually doing this easily at most events was nil. I then turned to artists such as Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Grandmaster Flash & James Zabelia who in the end sold me on Traktor Scratch Pro. I have been using Traktor for every set of mine in the past month now and the power of this tool for DJ’s is simply outstanding, allowing you to easily edit and remix on the fly through use of cue points and seamless looping.
Incorporating all my tools, La Terraza was recorded on Traktor Scratch Pro, Korg Nano, 3x CDJ1000MK3’s, DJM800 & Pioneer EFX1000. All editing of tracks was done live. Expect the usual crazy antics, plenty of subtle effects littered across the CD from the EFX1000, followed with a pinch of scratching and a moderate use of filters.
