The History of Breaks

Saturday 13 December
Fu, 4 Wolfe Street
Auckland

It was possibly one morning sometime in two thousand and eight, somewhere in Wellington airport, at some time or another that Page3 and Defcon1, great chums indeed, threw about the idea of educating the electro house populous, that have been rampaging through Auckland’s dance scene for a number of years now, on the sound of Breaks. Both these global jet setting superstars’ rise to fame was in fact due to the powerful influence of the Breaks sound but unfortunately Defcon1 is now famous for cheesey electro house sets and Page3 for mixing together Milli Vanilli, Boney M and Grease megamixes… Oooer. Shot lads! Talk about falling by the wayside!

Anyway, they woke up and are now basically (even though they actually have no idea, at all, about much) setting up school at Fu with the idea of helping to inject some excitement back into the Breaks scene and educating the electro house massive on the “good” genre.

In fact they have absolutely no idea where Breaks comes from but reckon it goes a little something like this:The Hip Hop break → Uptempo electro → Breakbeat Hardcore → Big Beat → Nu Skool Breaks as coined by Rennie Pilgrem et al → Breaks as we know it today.

Sounds good doesn’t it, and that’s the main thing. The Defcon1 / Page3 combo is so charismatic that they can have anyone believing anything at anytime. Now, they plan to run a series of these events rotating the DJs, hopefully getting some old men out of retirement at the same time, and most probably completely changing the above “timeline” to suit their needs. To be fair any bending of said “timeline” would be more perhaps to reflect other types of breakbeat music (that have had their own journeys over time) that along the way have had some influence on the Breaks sound. These types of music, or genres, could include in the future Jungle, Drum n Bass (same thing dumb arse), Miami Bass etc.

So essentially, whilst they had everyone’s best interests in mind, all they have really done is to completely confuse the fuck out of all their potential punters. Not only that but Defcon1 went and booked his tight little ass somewhere is Australia on the inaugural night; just to confuse everyone further.

At the end of the day, all confusion aside, they can and will (1) guarantee a series of mad fun (read “wicked n bad” if you is a true thug) nights showcasing some of the best (read oldest) DJs Auckland has to offer and some of Auckland’s brightest upcoming talent (read youngest) featuring (2) incredibly diverse sets throughout each night that (3) roughly reflect the progression over time, of the sound we know today simply as BREAKS.

Good on ya lads!
