Well... went along to this new 'super bar' on friday night, not really my scene but thought we would go and check it out,

first off we arrive and as per usual I was too under dressed for the 'main stream bars', I was were a polo shirt, black pants and skate shoes, however this bouncers decided to let me in but "pick up my ideas for next time..." hmm (thats if there will be a next time)

get a drink downstairs intersting crowd nothin too amazing, so we decide to check out the second level.

here there is another bouncer to the bar, again again i am too under dressed, have to be wearing a proper shirt and black shoes, whats up with having sperate dress for the same establishment??? Another couple we were with mid forties, he is wearing a black dinner jacket black pants and a very nice pair of black business shoes, and still he wasnt allowed in....

I said ok where can i go for a smoke, third level he replied. so we walk up to the third level and find another bouncer at the door. Sorry guys we are too full,,,, looking through it was not full at all,,,, maybe just not cool enough,

at this point we are over it, finish our drinks rapidly and walk down and leave...

Not too impressive,,,, would be pretty cool for a gig tho... but need heeps of people to fill, mezanies reminded me a bit of the old phoenix..

Be interesting to see what its like in a year... is it going to be a fad..... i surpose having the rugby players going back after games that will help...

I wont go back in a hurry.....
[quote]
Wouldn't mind checking it out...

I would imagine its just the Establishment on a larger scale though.
[quote]
Going on Friday to check it out.... Be interesting, sounds alot like the bars here in Sydney with the whole "your not cool enough, nor is your name on my clipboard of pretend names"
There's an Establishment here too which is the same people as in Welly. It's a waaaayy nicer bar though with a beautiful kinda outdoor area but full of Suits...

Heard a couple of similar dress-code stories from people over the recent weekend too...

I rocked in at about 10.30pm on opening night in a sweater, jeans & street shoes. No worries. Got inside and everyone was dressed in suits and ball gowns. I stopped and though:

"It's only a bar opening - why is everyone dressed up to the nines"?! Crazy.

I do struggle to see how well the bar will do, given the cost of running such a large establishment and that there's only home rugby games 16 weeks of the year. It may feel really empty on occasions. DB has thrown a shitload of cash behind it though, so no doubt that will keep them running for a while.

i'm not "picking up my ideas" for anyone Cool

i already live at sandwiches and the only other bar i'd go to has changed ownership and they are in the process of phasing out the phat beats so i guess its sammies and sneakers and t-shirts forever

i'll wear a shirt to your 30th though pstu Razz
[quote]
It was a good experience im my opinion, regardless of music tastes, commercial electro house and damn 80s classics like establishment plays and repeats. I dressed like a suit, just so i wouldnt get denied, good bars they have there Smile

Be keen to go again wedneday night.

What bar is that dude?

And where is this new superbar? Was mentioned to me on the weekend...that they practically have to fill it to the brim every weekend or they won't breakeven! Laughing
So far, with the dress coding and general disallowing people in, they're not going about that the right way, eh?
[quote]
lol

Sounds like the sort of place I'll never spend my money in.
[quote]
Yeah good luck breaking even if they're going to be wankers at the door.

Where is this place?
[quote]
8 Cambridge Terrace And 17-19 Blair Street, Wellington

Spread between both streets? Must be massive...

"Madame Jojo's

Laughing

Combined with...

"The Millard
The official home of The Hurricanes and Wellington Lions. Come and support Wellington rugby at The Millard."

...sounds shit to me!

De-dannying - fuck man, that'd take for ever...he must have permeated into walls by now...Exit Mould to the rescue! Laughing

I think there could actually be the possibility of a dance party here now, eventually, seeing as how The Establishment and Shooters are both holding a dance event on the same weekend. Would have to be a Superclub sort of event though I reckon.

Got in at 6:30 on Friday night wearing jeans and white sneakers. Big place, would be awesome for multi zone dance parties with the screens and zones. But in it's current state I think it is trying to be too many things in one go.

It does the beer drinking sports thing quite well, but Madame Jo Jo's was meant to be marketed as a burlesque theme style bar, accoriding the the interview with one of the owners the other week. Severley lacking that in my opinion. Get rid of the two domineering beer Ts on the bar, carpet the floors limit the lighting effects in there to when the DJ is actually playing later (it was fucken distracting and blinding at 6:30pm!) and the music was shit. Sounded like "Now, Thats What I call Cheese 73!"

when did biggest bar in wherever become a cool thing to aspire to . my frst thoughts ran to the big booze barns NZ used to do so well - lots of people in big spaces swilling as quick as possible and rarkin up each over so as to get to the fighting nice and early.

i went to a function there second night. First Monteiths was flat - good start. music was nice - a local group on grounnd floor - a bit of house up in Madame JoJo's.

Can't say i like the feeling or safety aspect of balconys two floors up - possible to get tipped over the edge ?? very possible for glasses to be dropped from above - i hope not.

prolly trying to be too much.

Bouncers seemed friendly enough - but then i had black shoes with my jeans - and i think i had a shirt with collar.

Like most places though - look sober and look like you gotta a gold card.

J* - agee with you The Establishment in Sydders is way different to the Welly one. marguerits are especially good out back

Will do on Friday..... But basically its just down from Establishment (where Simply Squeezed factory used to be) and goes all the way through to Cambridge Terrace. The Cambridges terrace entrance used to be Caesars and is right across from the bar in the middle of the road.

Oh yup! I know where it is now! Cheers bro! Smile

Going to go check out Temperance on Friday night with the gals... heard nothing but shiiit things tho...

Only let in younge girls and old men! They dont make good drinks...and its shit club music.. It will be just another Establishment I reckon...

The whole idea for Temperance, was to build it for the world cup (they will make a killing).... and it is the offical club rooms for the Wellington Lions, Hurricanes and NZRFU...

I highly doubt the will utilise it for something like a Super Club (woop woop) they are going for a very different market..

If you are entering the bar from Cambridge Terrace side you would just keep on walking, you look through the windows onto pokie machines, it just say scheap and tacky to me. What sort of clientelle are they going for? The general meathead imo.

Why do you whine about dress codes?
It's not exactly hard to wear a collared shirt.

:>

T-shirts just stink of not making an effort.

And don't bother telling me how expensive your t-shirt and sneakers are, because cost has absolutely no relation to formality.

Went last friday dressed up all nice, my boyfriend was wearing black shoes a nice shirt and dark jeans and were refused entry to madame jo jo's bouncer told us that he had to be in a suit or no entry. Apparently you need to be invited to become a member which costs about $100 then you get invited to members only parties but they will only be offering membership to 100-150ppl so the bouncer told me. I think partying with the same 150ppl everytime there is an event could get boring and there's no guarantee they'd all show up, haven't heard good things from anyone else either

It's a wellington thing...place plays shit music from the sounds of it and also sounds like it'll be attract a shit-house crowd too...you gotta remember this is a dance forum, everyone on here goes to Subnine, Sandwiches, The Venue Formally Know As Phoenix, Mercury etc where come as you are is fine and dandy, mostly. Welly scene is pretty low on wank factor...except Jeffthechef, coz, well, he's just a total wanker through and through! Froggy

you think wearing a collared shirt is making an effort? it takes the same effort to put on a collared shirt as it does a tshirt. conforming does not take effort. you are a douche.

wearing something that expresses yourself is effort, and if it takes a t-shirt to do that, so be it. if it takes a collar to do that, all good too
