you don't wanna spend too much time refering to The Scene - it's crapola
try inthemix.com.au or residentadvisor.com.au Wink

On that note is anyone producing much local writing about the techno/electro/electronica scene? I have seen Miles column in pavement, but it has a very international flavour also....

i think techno could be due for a big comeback...

Talking about a scene is like smelling about art....
[quote]
did u mean 'art' or 'fart' ??
[quote]
nah, i just believe its stupid to write about or analyse with words something that in reality can only be appreciated through direct experience and participation using the senses of hearing, sight and touch (ok and maybe smell in some circumstances).
[quote]
hang on.... what's happening??? oh, that's right - we're writing about techno Wink

hehe

um, Miles' column is great as it's about the music, gets loads of people interested in releases new artists, and a good laugh at the same time. No point talking too much about a scene that's a tiny blip on the techno radar when there's loads more to talk about that's interesting, tho he always mentions things when they happen.

Occasionally people will write about things, but it's proportional, so there's not much.

Im not meaning to offend anyone, its more like im refering to people wanting to hear what a gig was like (when they didnt go). Basically i find gig reviews never represent the experience of what went on.

Much the same as i find it stupid people talking about a scene when they dont participate - as much as we here all try to discuss it, its a long way from typing shit on a message board to getting out and dancing till your legs hurt.

My my dont i sound ascetic today.... How "techno dj" of me Wink
[quote]
yep - with slug on that one!!!

I find it hard when someone passes coments, yet doesn't participate. Or will pass coments when they're not into the music (ie. househead saying they through dj x was shit, when they don't like the music dj x was playing, maybe they were richie hawtin? wouldnt make a difference)...

Informed discussion is wicked tho!

well its true that a gig can 'go off' for someone and die for another, depending on a whole raft of personal experience including the quality of their substances ... but its a hard line to say that something cant be commented on after it has occurred. True, a reviewer can never truly relay the 'vibe' and if s/he does comment on the vibe it may well have been a subjective interpretation that didnt stand true for half of the audience.... but in reality someone who is capable of stepping outside themselves to some extent may well be able to comment eg 'that the crowd really responded to DJ XYZ" and tell us that it was eg 'a jacking Detroit sound mixed hard and fast". This gives non-attendees some indication of what they missed. eg the last Derrick May gig for me sucked coz it was way too housey , if I had read a review of a gig he did previous to the AKL one I may have decided not too go. It wouldn't have been hard for a reviewer to have noted that fact. So I think gigs can be reviewed with some use. Now reviewing a scene is perhaps a little more complicated....

btw I haven't read Miles stuff - is it online or in a magazine?

Peat, "Pavement" bi-monthly bro....in the immortal words of Dick Emery.. "it's all done in the best possible taste" ..heh heh!!

[quote]
Wasnt that Kenny Everitt? :-O
[quote]
yeah pete - you're absolutly right about knowing about a certain dj's styles!! tho if anyone had talked to most people prior to May or listened to that CD floating about they'd have known that he's knowen for dropping housed up tech for the first part of his set.... tho saying that he was techno as for the last hour/half....

it's just difficult for the scene (which is struggling to be positive) when someone passes comment on something ie' dj x sucked cos they were too hard... when they should say something like" dj x played quite hard, which I wasn't really into... it's a LOT more constructive, and doesn't cast judgement on something unduely...

Too few people have the skills to judge something unbiased (which is where journalists come in!), anyone doing so should really try to make the comment as constructivve as possible before commenting - it may be damaging, when in fact it could have been the bomb for many others (May certainly impressed most of the punters last December... even saying he sucked for you is. which is a fair enough sentiment, casts a certain amount of negativitity on his performance, which blew many people away - including some of NZ's top international promotors!!)

Just a personal thing as over the years (12+!!) I've seen many performances or parties bagged which have actually been very good, all to the detrement of the local scene... we should all be supporting and putting positive energy into the scene Smile
[quote]
Slug, you are right. I realised that after my post. Getting my camp '70's British comedians confused!!!

yeh well put Crucial-its important to note that I did say "it sucked for me", I wasnt baggin anything just noting (very subjectively) that I didnt have much fun that nite (maybe I had my period of somethin <smirk>Wink which was real disappointin to me coz when I saw May at Fu the year b4 it rokked my sox off Smile
so yeh people shld focus on the good stuff coz mostly the bad stuff is comin from yer own hed!
[quote]
hehe -= yeah, like that =- pretty much sums up most people's bad nights, most of the time bad nights for people come from them not being in the right mood - funny, comes across more in Auckland as the scene is so small, kindof 1 degree of seperation type thing, if a couple of people had a bad night at a tech gig, then you'll probably know it, and will taint your view ;0
