techno in wgtn?

most probably a long shot but...

ive just recently moved from gd old akld to wgtn (which is just as nice by the way ) and was wondering if any1 could tell me of a techno club, bar, nite or even dj and where i might find them so i can get my fix? i know kevin saunderson is playing at the end of sept but are there any local gigs which the ppl in the akld scene might be able to help me find??

Hey there hefner, well the people I have found out about are

Stereo Nasties - Shadowgirl & Agent 99, they have a show Friday 11pm-1am on Radio Active, and they do the infamous Fun Poison parties http://funpoison.com/

S-ence - Coda, they put on "The Black Room", there was one recently at The Watkins Bar, they have had special guest such as Matt Drake (Hardsoul-Auck) =)

Disasteradio - not exactly techno, but really old school shit, I saw this guy last night and it was pretty cool http://www.mp3.com.au/artist.asp?id=9937

I think there is an Electro gig coming up called Luxuria at Indigo, I went to the last one, it slid between clash and electro breaks, with a touch of techno, that will be another good one.

Keep an eye on obscure (http://obscure.co.nz) and The Package (www.thepackage.co.nz), they have the goss on most of the up and coming gigs. If I find out about any I will be posting them up here.

But in general I think Techno in Wellington is suffering the same issues as Auckland, too much choice. I think heaps of the early techno (pre 97 and earlier) crowds moved onto D&B and other genres, but I am sure there is still many techno hardcores out there.

Matt D, you would have plenty to say about this seeing as you have played in Welli quite a bit.

thanx - posted the same thread in the flipside forum and the same djs were mentioned as well, so i'll definitely keep my eyes and ears open for them.

have also been looking at the local gig guides that float around as well.

yeah i've been to the watkins bars to try and catch coda play but always seem to go on the wrong nite for some reason... and was infact visiting wgtn when matt d played there but didnt go

going up 2 akld the end of august so at least i can get my fix then and of course there is kevin saunderson at the end of the month

I lived down in Welly a couple of years back and had the same problem
Agent 99 was the shiznitz then so definitely keep an eye out for her!
Obscure was the bible when I was hunting tek events

we need to get the techno scene amping in welly...

There're a lot of djs around that're starting to move towards it from various other genres...

Yup scene motivation is a problem alright.

I think some intercity cross polenation is in order...

How about a fun Poison or Blackroom tour to Auckland, and a Hardsoul + Ces Nah Pas tour to wellington aye?

Or even a national combined one? Ahh who knows aye...

how about all the people playing tech from other scenes stand up and say they are!!! cos ive seen heard techno tunes in reocrd boxes at all sorts of events.

and how about the different types of techno coming together in a nite...instead of saying we should and then saying something else on the street....we have such a small scene anyway.

im sure we could epose some culture to this country if we come together a bit more.

yep, there are a few djs in welly who drop techno into their set... the hard dance djs play hard techno, and the tech house djs play the groovier stuff...

I have a plan to get some of them together for a techno-themed night

btw, craig richards played about 3 hours worth of techno and acid techno in his 5 hours set last saturday down here.... (and we were all expecting prog!)

it was bloody amazing

with luck he'll be back later this year, or early next year, so don't miss him!

Yeah I caught him on Friday, he did a little set in the small bar, really dug it, was pretty cool.
