Assuming someone actually reads the current affairs sction, what do you guys think about the secondary teachers' strikes?
A lot of people have been trolling out the usual arguments in defense of, or against striking in general, and also about the teaching profession.
You know, the usual about teachers being overworked, having to do more work for the NCEA, not having enough non-contact time, and having pay rises less than inflation. On the other side the suaul arguments of "man, they get 12 weeks holiday a year!" and that they work only 8am till 3:30.
Regardless of the accuracy of these claims, I always find it ridiculous that while in opposition a political party blames the current govt. for all the strike action, and says they will resolve it when they get in (as Labour and Alliance did during the last teacher strikes), and suddenly when they get in they actually realise they have a "budget" and they can't spend infinite amounts of money appeasing every group in the public sector.
It seems this strategy relies on the public being stupid, and forgetting all the bullsh*t they spoke prior to the election. It really annoys me.
Both parties are guilty of it, National getting on their high horse about electricity prices (whether or not it was due to the reforms, which I personally doubt) is another classic. Gezz.
