On tagging:

...it's freedom of expression... in defense of taggers.

Christ, could you really consider it a right under the freedom of expression umbrella?

I agree with you. So why bother making such a silly remark like calling it a freedom of expression?

I'm not sure why tagging has suddenly become big in the media again (referring to before the death the other week).

time of year Rob - fires seem to be quite popular with the media this week too

Turia is a nutbar IMHO - most of what she says is rubbish, even when she often says something quite good/thought provoking you know its a happy accident

no need for violence Bob, its you who gets punished

and now they're going to ban sales of spraycans to under-18s. yeah, that's always worked historically... Neutral

I agree. But it isn't tagging, it's American style bombing/subway art. Tagging is just a punks version of leaving your mark.

upside - them companies that do quite nicely out of painting over graffiti (whom the media like to interview for comment and film) will get even more money to do their jobs

a growth industry

All crimes exist in the general (disobedience) and the specific (the crime itself)

Tagging is worse than murder simply because it is usually carried out repetitively, indicating a much greater degree of disobedience to the law than crimes of passion such as murder.

When somebody tags every night, every week, they are continually and willingly biting their thumb at the order that creates civilisation.

I have a soft spot for Tariana Turia. Yes i know she's a bit of a nutbar but...she's not afraid to express points of view that sometimes challenge or upset the status quo. Sometimes these can be silly and not very well thought through; other times, her observations are quite insightful and perceptive.

There used to be an absolutely brilliant piece of graffiti-work at the Morningside Station (in comic-book/cartoon form) depicting the dangerous effects of "P." Of course, this piece of graffiti-work was completely unauthorised. However, it undoubtedly had artistic merit, was an expression of street culture, and at the same time it conveyed an important social message, in a powerful way.

The Council of course painted it over - now you can look at a blank wall instead while waiting for the train. Neutral The Council failed to paint over much less worthy tagging all over other parts of the station. Neutral Neutral
