I remember hearing of a study that found supplements have little to no effect, other than as a placebo.
Has anyone heard of this, or was this just referring to 'natural' supplements?
A lot of them are gimmicks. There's a hugely profitable industry, fueled by magazines such as Mens Health, of fake products that either rehash existing products & supplements, or throw in a "secret new ingredient" which does next to nothing, eg nitrous/nitric oxide or arginine. They're always supported by ridiculous claims of strength increase and muscle growth, with some juiced-up bodybuilder on the advert. It's a male equivalent of a lot of the female beauty industry, with beautiful supermodels, fake science and fictitious words.
The reason the industry exists is because there are a lot of people who'd rather throw money at some flavour-of-the-month product because it's less effort, than follow basic proven weight-lifting programs stringently & regularly, harden the fuck up and push themselves in the gym, and fix their diet.
