Ok so this gig was at Fabric. Supermayer had interestingly enough split there set in two, which timed perfectly with Rother in the other room. I guess this was done on purpose and it seems to be becoming a regular thing at fabric now.
Anyway, there is not much I can say about Rother anymore that I haven't said before, but I will anyway. The dude plays an amazing live set. It was different enough from last time not to be boring, but he still squeezed Father in there, which was again...still awesome. Good to hear a few more old school style electro bangers in there too. Better yet, we bumped into him out the back of the Supermayer dj booth, so I had a little chat along the lines of....OMG, I love sex with machines....I have been listening to you for years....I want to have your babies kinda thing. I got a photo with him as well. I look like I'm trying to rape him in it. Cool Greg cool.
Anyway, onto Supermayer. Each time I see these fellas they seem to be playing more and more banging. I guess its the whole minimal revolt thing, and I gotta say I like it. No dark banging like Hawtin, but a really upbeat style that keeps you dancing and makes you feel happy in the guts (esp on the fabric room one system) They were going one for one all night this time, and although usually I think ping ponging can be dumb and ruin a flow, I guess these guys have been working together so long now it really works. I went to go and have a chat to Superpitcher, but ended up talking to Mayer instead. Really nice dude. He told me that Auckland was a bit of a musical void as far as his kind of music went. I got the impression that this may have been based around what Superpitcher had said but who knows. They played a few tracks from there album (most of which I missed) and I believe they finished up with the art of letting go at the end of the night. unfortuntly I had been so butt raped at work the week before I wasn't in much of a state to go out so bailed home early for europe time.(5.30am)
On a non techno note I went to see Beirut before hand, and have to say they are one of the best bands I have ever seen live. Bang on to how they sound on the cd, but with some little improv bits and lots of crowd interaction. I highly recommend them if they are ever about round your neck of the woods.
