The Stil Vodka NZ Drift Series hits Pukekohe for the first time on Sunday, July 15. It’s the second round of the series and Curt Whittaker is leading the points as we go into the event.
Up for grabs is over $40,000 in Stil Vodka Series cash and prizes so if you want to see this country’s best ever drifting, then July 15 is the day to arrive at Pukekohe to witness the wildest sideways battles ever in New Zealand.
We’re expecting upwards of 30 drift teams to arrive for a slice of the prizes so once again, this is the event to attend if you’ve never witnessed smoking, sliding, door-to-door battle-action before.
Gates for spectators open at 9am and cars will be on track just after 10am. The Top 16 battles begin after lunch so if it’s cold or wet in the morning, you can still head to Pukekohe in the afternoon and witness the action. Rain or shine the Stil Vodka NZ Drift Series will go ahead.
We’ve opened all the grandstands free to the public for this event, so those who have been out to Puke before and reckon there’s no good viewing spots left, my suggestion is to hit the upper floors of the main stand and you’ll see what I mean. Not only is the stand covered, you can even wander inside for a bit of warmth and catch the action from Manfeild on the TVs. On top of all the Stil action outside, we also have a Playstation public drift tournament courtesy of gameplayer.co.nz up on the third floor along with a whole bunch of other activities to keep interest high.
During lunch we’ll have 10 times National Offroad Champion, Tony McCall along with his 400hp Porsche powered monster to have a shot at drifting. Tony called us and threw down the challenge that speed, off-road tyres and Pukekohe’s 200kph main sweeper should meet. We’ve told him this ain’t no bush wacking experiment and the tarmac is where he has to stay. Let’s see what he has to offer on the day.
Speaking of knobblies, Sean Falconer will be out to prove a point when he gets back in the seat for the first time this year. He’s lined up to take on EVO rally ace Mark Tapper in a clash of the sideways codes. Tapper reckons drifting is easy, so you’ll have to wait and see if he’s got the ‘nads to throw his knobblies into Pukekohe’s main sweeper like the rest of our Stil Vodka series contenders…the Rally versus Drift session will be one to watch…
Don’t forget, we’ll be bringing along the Stil Series Offical Radar Gun to check entry speeds for the first time at Pukekohe. The Stil Promo Girls will be wandering the venue taking your entries into the Stil Warp Factor competition. Whoever gets closest to guessing the fastest speed into the main sweeper will win some cool stuff from Stil Vodka on the day. The Warp Factor winner’s name will be announced at prizegiving and you’ll have to be there to collect your prize – R18 of course.
Once again Racepro will have their hotlaps up for grabs during lunchbreak. For $80 you’ll be strapped in with Steve Mitchell to taste the fear of throwing yourself headlong into the main sweeper at an angle your mind just doesn’t want to comprehend. There’s only a select number up for grabs so first in first served is the answer for three hard out laps of Pukekohe. Racepro will also be giving away one free hotlap to a lucky spectator on the day. Once again the Stil Promo girls will have the entry forms so make sure you catch up with them on July 15 to fill in the details.
To wind out the day, after the Top 16 eliminations are completed, we’ll be running the first ever team drift at Pukekohe. All entries on the day will be eligible to enter in groups of four to compete for the Stil Vodka Teams Challenge. If you’ve never witnessed door-handle to door-handle synchronised drifting from a team, then there’s one more reason to be at Puke on July 15.
Finally, don’t forget you are invited to the Stil Vodka NZ Drift Series official after party. Just ask anybody who made the Palmy one and you’ll soon know we had a good time. The NZPC TV crew will be on hand to cover the day’s activities then they’ll be straight into the editing suite to rough a programme together for the big screens later that evening. Doors open at the Carpark Bar down by Auckland’s Viaduct basin at 6pm and exclusive footage of the day’s drifting will go on screen soon after. We’ve got DJ Kronical playing and with a bit of luck you’ll catch what New Zealand’s top drifters get up to under cover of darkness…
General admission tickets to the Pukekohe round of this year’s Stil Vodka NZ Drift Series on Sunday, July 15 are $20. You can buy them at the gates or shoot over to trademe and type in the key word “Stil†to find them online. Car parking is once again $5 and if you want to wander the pits during the day then its $5 per person.
One last thing, Stil Vodka, Racepro, Pit Stop, RPM, Fram Filters, Dobisport and Tein are supporting this series, so when you’re making your next purchase, think long and hard before going past these companies – they deserve your support.
If you have any questions feel free to post them here or e-mail direct to mfleming@parkside.co.nz
